A perfect cake for February 22, George Washington's birthday

Cake

1 cup butter, softened
1 3/4 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
4 eggs
3 cups flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 can cherry pie filling
3/4 cup sliced almonds

Icing

1 cup powdered sugar
1/4 teaspoon almond
1 to 2 Tablespoons water or milk

Cream together butter and sugar, beat in vanilla, almond extract and eggs.  In separate bowl, mix together flour, baking powder, and salt, add to wet ingredients and mix just until flour disappears.  Spread half of the batter in the pan, top with cherry pie filling.  Drop the rest of batter on top of the pie filling in spoonfuls.  Sprinkle with almond.
