Summertime means it's festival season and Cedarburg's 24th Annual Strawberry Festival is sure to please on June 27 & 28, Chocolate Covered Strawberrries2009.  The Strawberry Festival offers free admission and tons of fun for the whole family.  Downtown Washington Avenue will be traffic-free to allow festival goers a leisurely stroll to the local boutiques as well as vendor merchants in the marketplace.   In addition to numerous delicious food vendors, be sure to take in "all things strawberry" and get your fill of strawberry shortcake, wine, slushies, or fresh strawberries & ice cream.   There will be lots of live music (top forty, bluegrass Participaint in Plein Air Painting  Competitionrock and more), the Cedar Quacker 500 duck race on Cedar Creek, hayrides, a strawberry bubble gum blowing contest, innumerable vendors at the Arts on the Avenue marketplace, farm vendors, and the Berry Big 5K run/walk.  And let's not forget about the pancake breakfast offered on Sunday.   We can hardly wait!

The Strawberry Festival wouldn't be complete without the Plein Air painting competition.  Artists from around the country descend upon Cedarburg's Historic District during the  
week leading up to the Festival capturing the abundant architectural beauty and charm of our lovely town.  A juried auction of the paintings will take place on Saturday, June 27; don't miss this great opportunity to pick up an original painting to keep memories of Cedarburg close in your mind's eye!  We're sure to be there scouting for a new addition to the collection of pieces displayed in our Gathering Room.

Everybody wants to be outdoors during the warm days of summer and Cedarburg's proximity to Cedar Creek and the Milwaukee River make it a great destination for kayakers and Kayaks along Cedar Creekcanoeists alike.  Cedarburg's Aqua Guide and Outfitters will continue to offer rental of their kayaks & canoes (along with shuttle service) to The Washington House Inn guests.  They will arrange rental, drop-off and pick-up at the Inn, and take you to a boat launch a mere 15 minutes away on the Milwaukee River.  Rental includes kayak, instructions, vests and paddles.  Inn guests receive an unbelievable 30% discount on these services. The Ozaukee County Interurban Trail's(www.interurbantrail.us) 30-mile paved trail spans the entire length of Ozaukee County and offers a fabulous bird watching, biking, walking or rollerblading experience for folks with all level of physical abilities.  The trail connects the historic downtowns of Mequon, Thiensville, Cedarburg, Grafton, Port Washington and Belgium with the natural landscape.   Arrive with your own gear, or bike rental is available at Local Motion Outfitters, conveniently located 2 blocks north of The Washington House Inn and only a few feet away from the Interurban Trail.  Local Motion Outfitters offers single, tandem and trailer bikes (as well as canoes and kayaks.)  Link here to Local Motion Outfitters or call (262) 618-4640 for more information.
 
And no outdoor adventure would be complete without a hearty meal to keep one energized!  We're all thrilled that  Cedarburg's T.J. Ryan recently expanded into the former site of Hoffman's Meat Market and is continuing the tradition.  Let T.J. Ryan's Market put together a lunch basket for you to take along while you're out and about canoeing, kayaking, or biking throughout scenic Ozaukee County.  Contact T.J. And, the warm days and nights of summer mean that Cedarburg's infamous "Summer Sounds" Friday Night outdoor concerts at Cedar Creek Park are back in session!  Take in a different band every Friday night of the summer season, June through August.  Watch the Inn's monthly newsletters for announcements of the band lineup, or visit the Summer Sounds website to plan ahead to hear the specific band of your choice (see the link below in the Calendar of Events).   Bring your favorite picnic blanket or ask our Innkeeper for a throw blanket before heading to the concert.  You could grab some local goodies at the Friday Farmer's Market, take advantage of an outdoor feast provided by the Cedar Creek Park food vendors or visit one of the downtown restaurants, pubs or cafes.  It's a perfect end to a busy week and the start of a great weekend in Cedarburg.

June 4 Cedarburg Cultural Center presents "Ozaukee Nights" free Thursday night concert series featuring "Pieta Brown," a contemporary singer/songwriter who blends folk, blues, country and rock. Featuring mid-western musicians from a range of musical traditions, "Ozaukee Nights" is designed with everyone in mind. This continuing series of free concerts, all starting at a family-friendly 6 pm, features good music in a relaxed setting, with seating in chairs or on the Center's carpeted floor - blankets are welcome. An added feature at each concert is a 15-minute question and answer session with the musicians between their two 45-minute sets, moderated by a WUWM disc jockey. Food provided by Olsen's Piggly Wiggly and beverages will also be available for purchase.   www.ozaukeenights.com
 
June 18-27 Plein Air Painting Contest and Sale - For more than half a century Cedarburg has served as a haven for artists and craftspeople. Its meandering creek, charming stone houses, bucolic landscapes and laid-back lifestyle have attracted painters and poets, potters and jewelers, photographers, woodworkers, musicians, sculptors and more. Twenty five years ago a handful of these people formed the Cedarburg Artists Guild to help bring attention to the burgeoning arts community. The Guild's current membership of 150 represents the entire spectrum of the visual, literary and performing arts. As the Guild's numbers have grown, so has its mission. The Cedarburg Artists Guild is dedicated to promoting and preserving the arts in Southeastern Wisconsin through education, scholarships, events and programs. June 19 Cedarburg Farmer's Market invites you to treat yourself to farm fresh produce, flowers, perennials and herbs from local farmers. Additional edibles, freshly prepared bakery items, and am array of hand-crafted treats await you. Enjoy live, local music on occasion. The market will be held on Fridays from 8am - 2pm beginning June 19th and running through the end of October. 
 
June 20-21 Ozaukee County Pioneer Village Open House. This unique rural village of yesteryear is nestled in a picturesque setting amidst the rolling Hawthorne Hills. The Ozaukee County Pioneer Village is a collection of over 20 buildings and structures from the 1840's to the early 1900's. Homes are fully furnished, barns and outbuildings, plus the original Cedarburg Railroad Depot has been relocated and fully restored here. Open for tours on Saturdays and Sundays during the open season, plus don't miss the special events! June 26 The 7th Annual Summer Sounds free outdoor music series presents "King Soloman," dancehall roots reggae at Cedar Creek Park . In addition to booking some of the hottest bands in the area, we've expanded with even more great food and a larger wine and beer selection; plus fresh-from-the-tap blonde root beer from Silver Creek Brewing Company! June 27-28 Cedarburg's Annual Strawberry Festival -- Festival-goers can enjoy the Arts On The Avenue events, Plein Air Painting Competition and Art Auction, live music throughout and strawberries galore.  Schedules of events are available at the Visitor Center or information booths at each end of the festival.  Hours: Sat. 10am - 6pm and Sun. 10am - 5pm.  Pancake Breakfast is from 8am - 11am on Sunday only.  www.cedarburgfestivals.org 
 
June 28 The Riveredge Nature Center hosts the River Valley Bike Ride in Newburg, WI.   Riveredge is nestled in glacier-formed hills along the banks of the Milwaukee River in central Ozaukee County. This 370-acre natural sanctuary provides hands-on environmental education and outdoor opportunities for thousands of school children, adults and families each year. Education is our mission, along with land preservation and scientific research. Start your bike route in the heart of Newburg. The Gertrude Schroeder room is decorated in the Victorian style and features a Queen size bed, an oversize whirlpool bath and a fireplace.

Gertrude Schroeder was a teacher in Cedarburg who wrote  for the Cedarburg newspaper.  The Schroeder Guest House was home to the Schroeder family for 136 years.  The Schroeder family came to this country in 1812 from Oldenburg, Germany and  Juergen Schroeder commissioned the house to be built in 1856 by a man named "Liesenburg".  Gertrude Horn married Juergen Schroeder II and lived in the house until the age of 101.  In 1993 she moved out of the home and The Washington House Inn purchased it in 1994, renovating to include 5 private guest rooms, all in the Victorian style.  Schroeder Guest Room #1 was the original kitchen where Gertrude spent a significant amount of her time.
 
  

Recipe of the Month 

Strawberry-White Chocolate Biscuits

These pretty, slightly sweet biscuits are quick and delicious. 

5 cups buttermilk biscuit mix
1/2 cups strawberry jelly or jam
1 1/4 cup water
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup white chocolate chips
sugar for sprinkling
 
 
Preheat oven to 450 degrees F.  Combine jelly, water, and vanilla and mix well to break up jelly. Add biscuit mix and chocolate chips and fold in with a rubber spatula, mixing just until evenly moistened.  Drop approximately 1/4 cup of dough onto a lightly greased cookie sheet, sprinkle tops with sugar, and bake 8 to 9 minutes, until set and slightly browned.  Makes 16 biscuits.
