View From the Corner Booth Good day to all!
This past year the China Dine-ah family has been dealing with an issue of its own. On May 16, 2011 Michelle Glidden, our Lead Waitress was diagnosed with breast cancer and received light chemotherapy at the time. She was hoping that this treatment would rid her of cancer; however, in December at a follow up appointment, Michelle got the bad news. After surgery, radiation and chemotherapy Michelle is finally starting to feel better. During a recent doctors visit, things were looking good and she is about to receive the results of some recent testing, which will hopefully give her the answer she is looking for.
Usually a very private person, Michelle has given me permission to write about her illness in an effort to bring awareness to this very ugly disease. A month or so ago Amy Rau was in the Dine-ah wearing a pink t-shirt with the words "Cancer Sucks" on the back. Even though I dislike this word this might be the one area where it can be used appropriately. Jean Johnson who was waiting on her asked Amy where she got the shirt. It turns out Amy has a company that makes and sells them.
Amy who has an associate's degree in graphic arts came up with the design when her uncle was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. She actually started her company by creating the "Cancer Sucks" shirts. It was not an intentional business venture, but rather a way to help "my large family support him (her uncle) and raise awareness of this awful disease" Amy said. "I did them (t-shirts) voluntarily, just trying to recoup my costs and all proceeds were donated to my uncle. Throughout the process, I was convinced I was doing the right thing, as every time I turned around, people either saw the shirt or heard the story and they told me theirs."
Sherri came to me with the idea of purchasing shirts for staff and having them wear them while working. My first reaction was "Really??" as I did not want to upset even one person. After speaking to Michelle I agreed this was the right thing to do on her behalf and also on behalf of all those who have gone before her having experienced this awful disease.
I don't know of a family who has not been affected, I personally lost both my Mom and Dad to cancer. I also communicate with many of you who are either dealing personally with cancer or have a loved one who is. So if you come into the Dine-ah on a Saturday you will see the entire staff wearing their pink t-shirts in support of Michelle. Even though I am not in the photos I too have a t-shirt and also wear it on Saturdays in the Dine-ah.
We have come a long way in the treatment and remission rates of cancer but have yet to find the cure. Someday we all hope and pray that this dreaded disease will be gone forever. Michelle, we are all pulling for you and for a 100% recovery.
Our hearts go out to all of you and your families who are affected by cancer and any life threatening disease.
On a brighter note, I wish you all a wonderful day, enjoy this beautiful weather and I hope to see you all soon. If you are from another part of the country and are reading this, your weather may not be as good as we are currently experiencing in Maine.
All the best,
Norm
p.s. Dude was really excited seeing so many of you at the Winslow and Augusta 4th of July parades. Dude told me it was very hot being a dog that day! For those of you who have not been in the Die-ah during the summer months, we have a state of the art heating and air conditioning system that maintains the dining room at a constant 68 to 70 degrees for your comfort, year round.
The following is a poem written by Sherri on behalf of Michelle:
At the Dine-ah we all know what we're wearing, When Saturday rolls around. We'll all be dressed in our CANCER SUCKS shirts, And though, cancer sucks, we won't wear a frown. We wear these to support our dear friend, Michelle Glidden has fought valiantly- She has worked through radiation And has had her last chemotherapy! We will continue to wear these through recovery And though that may take a little while, We will show our support for those fighting And our shirts make everyone smile. Staff wearing the specially made cancer t-shirts
