Good Day!
What beautiful weather! I think this is the mildest winter that I can ever remember. If we don't get anymore significant snow fall, we should have an early spring and not too bad of a mud season! For the summer people reading this newsletter, mud season in Maine is the time of the year when our gravel roads and camp roads turn to soup for a couple of weeks. The top 3" to 6" of frost leave the roads but the road is still frozen down below which prevents any drainage of the water above, thus the soupy mix called "mud season." It lasts longer depending on the quality of the road affected. Drainage is a huge factor which is why you see roads built up higher that the surrounding ground.
My wrist is feeling better this week thanks to all of you. I have been doing only 15-20 emails at a time and then I work on something else. The short spurts seem to work to keep my wrist from any pain. I have also been exercising my hand and that seems to have helped. And yes, I probably should go to a laptop or voice activated system. I believe my Blackberry has that capability, I just haven't learned how to use it as yet. If you are like me, many times I do not learn new technology until I have to. This issue with my wrist just might force me to go to the next level. Anyway, thank you for all your notes, concerns and remedies.
We had another fabulous night last night at the Dine-ah with Jon James hosting Trivia Night. We had 50+ people in attendance, many laughs, good food, great company, good drinks and several prize winning teams. We gave away a $25 China Dine-ah gift card, a coupon for Nachos for Two, a China Dine-ah hooded sweatshirt and two tickets to an upcoming game featuring the Portland Red Claws, Maine's semi-pro basketball team.
Just a reminder, we will be serving a corned beef dinner on St. Patrick's Day Saturday March 17. We will also be featuring some green colored desserts, green beer, green pancakes and some special adult beverages like the Green Mist and Leprechaun's Choice. We may even have other surprises in store for you but you will have to join us to find out what they are! Meagan assures me the corned beef will melt in your mouth! Please come out as we can use all the support we can get. Winter is a much slower time for us as we truly are a destination point for many of our patrons. Also, make your Easter plans early to join us as we will be seating up until 6 pm for that big holiday on Sunday April 8. This is a change from our regular Sunday closing time. We are not taking reservations but we promise to get you in as quickly as possible. We have pagers so if there is a wait time, you can do so in the comfort of your vehicle or at the bar.
For all of you that have written about a loved one or a friend who is going through a difficult time in their lives, you are in my thoughts and prayers. How about all those unfortunate folks that have been dealing with the aftermath of all those tornadoes? Makes a 12" snowstorm look like a piece of cake. I will take the cold and snow any day over a tornado or hurricane.
Speaking of tornadoes, I am off to Tennessee for a National Community Bankers Convention serving in my role as a trustee for Kennebec Savings Bank. As a collective group representing commercial banks, we take our communities very seriously and are dedicated to finding ways of giving back.
Hope to see you soon at the Dine-ah,
Norm
