View From The Corner Booth

Norm head shot

Good day to all,

I've been pondering what I was going to write about today and as yet, I have not decided. I have many things going through my mind, it never seems to stop. Oh here we go.

My two boys Derek and Kyle have been driving for a combined 2 1/2 years and my youngest just had his first fender bender. This past Tuesday, Kyle slid off his girlfriend's driveway, which had turned into a sheet of ice covered lightly by snow. Kyle called immediately to tell me of his misfortune and I quickly asked about any damage. I could tell by his voice and in talking with him that the only thing he injured was his pride. At that point he didn't know what the damage was but only that his pick up truck slid into a tree on the driver's side. He was also stuck but assured me that his girlfriend's Dad would pull him out. I told him if he needed my help to call me back, fully believing I would not be getting a call. Kyle is pretty independent and really likes solving his own problems. This is a great thing!

As with most teenagers and with many adults, "texting" has been an effective way to communicate and I want to share the texts between Kyle and myself after the mishap and after we had spoken on the phone.

Kyle: Just a dent in the front fender and broke my mirror

Dad: Thanks for the heads up

Kyle: Ugh, feel dumb.

Dad: Great lesson learned

Kyle: Don't drive on ice!

Dad: Women can be costly! (first experience!)

Kyle: Hah! You're the best - love ya!

The real lesson has yet to be learned and that is how do we pay for the repairs? Leaving his pick up truck "as is" with a dented up front quarter panel and no drivers side rear view mirror is not an option, for my name is on the title.

Kyle has been on the phone talking to at least one Chevy dealership who quoted his quarter panel at $245. - too much for a high school kid who is playing sports and has no real income. Good thing for his friend Jake who lives in Whitefield. Through Jake, Kyle has learned of several places to pick up used parts, in fact he found the quarter panel for only $75. (closer to his budget!) and Jake's Dad has offered up a rear view mirror.

So off he goes, today, after school and before practice, Kyle and Jake are hitting the Chevy Silverado hard! I think the goal today is to get the mirror replaced and to secure the body parts. I have no doubt by the end of the weekend it will be repaired except for the painting.

There are several lessons to be learned here by both son and Dad:

1. Kyle- be more careful, when you know the back streets and driveways are icy.   There was ice everywhere this past Tuesday.
2. Kyle- to the degree possible, you are going to be held responsible for your actions.
3. Kyle- to stay on Dad's good side, solve problem as quickly as possible especially if you created it.
4. Kyle- it is not fun driving around in a vehicle that looks like you don't know how  to drive.
5. Kyle- own up to your shortcomings immediately and the reactions from above will be less.
6. Kyle - we all make mistakes, it is how you handle the situation that really matters.

7. Dad- don't overreact, things will work themselves out.
8. Dad- don't jump in and solve problems for our kids, but let them work it out and we will be amazed at the outcome.

Kids are great! Remember parents, they are what we make them, well most of the time!

On another note, I have been asked by one of our regular readers and someone who writes in often from the newsletter if I could help her out.

Sonja has an extended family member , Rochelle, who took a terrible fall and severed her spine. She is currently at Maine Medical Center in a drug induced coma with only a 30% chance of ever walking again. Sonja has asked that I reach out to our readers and asked if you all would include Rochelle in your prayers if you feel inclined to do so.

In our world filled with tragedy and triumph, sadness and happiness, poverty and prosperity, I ask that all have the absolute best day possible.

Your Friend, Norm
