Message from the ChairRob Crow, Class of 2006, Lloyd Industries
Did you attend or do you
belong?
If I asked you to tell me about
your Leadership Spokane experience, would you say that it is a program you
attended or one to which you belong?
The vision of Leadership
Spokane has always been one that is focused on the impact graduates can have on
the community beyond their attendance. I
believe it is the role of the Alumni Association to provide the support,
encouragement and opportunities to bring that vision to reality. We have just concluded a survey of alumni in
an effort to determine specifically what graduates expect of the association
and will incorporate the results in several exciting new projects that we will
be announcing over the coming months such as: -
All Alumni Reunion as
part of this year's graduation
-
Alumni website
facilitating ongoing connections and communication
-
Improved access for
Alumni to attend program days
Please keep your eyes open for
these and other opportunities to ensure that your answer is always an emphatic
I BELONG to LEADERSHIP SPOKANE! Rob

Building Community through the South
Perry Street Market
by the Governance Day SCAN Team
Teaching
people how to sustain themselves locally, rather than supporting them directly,
will build stronger communities in Spokane.
In January 2010,
Leadership Spokane Governance SCAN Team worked with the South Perry
Street Market Steering Committee and Board members to refine their mission and
vision to ensure that locally grown food and products would be available to
their neighborhoods.
Our effort
began in November during Human Needs Day when we learned that the South Perry
Street Market was in jeopardy of losing its location, and those who oversee the
market were looking for an opportunity to plan for their future.
We offered a our services to facilitate a review of the
South Perry Street Market mission and vision.
We also walked them through the process know as SWOT, identifying their
strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. We ended with pages of identified areas that
the board and steering committee members then prioritized as critical issues.
The newly
revised mission and vision statements for the market call for: - Strengthening
the market as an outlet for affordable local food.
-
Sustaining
small entrepreneurs.
-
Building
the community and improving the local economy.
-
Developing
an active and diverse board of directors.
-
Creating
alternative paths for youth activity and opportunities for food education.
The South
Perry Street Market Board is now grounded with a clear time line and set of
priorities. New bylaws have
been adopted and board vacancies filled. The board is negotiating a final contract for a new market location and
collaborating with a grant writing team to secure funding for administrative
office space and paid staff.
Members of
the South Perry Street Market Board have stated, "This process has contributed
to a hopeful expectation that the market would yield its best season to date." They also said they "have come away with a
pair of reference points which will help guide the organization and communicate
its purpose to the community we seek to serve."
There was even time for pizza and
hospitality! We all felt our efforts
were successful, and it was a great learning experience. Through this
effort, access to locally grown food can continue for those
neighborhoods the
South Perry Street Market serves.
