The Servant Leader
A Publication of the Leadership Spokane Alumni Association

December 2009
Message from the Chair

Rob Crow, Class of 2006, Lloyd Industries

In the holiday spirit, we along with most of our fellow Americans are mindful of the many things we have to be thankful for in our lives.  However, as servant leaders, we look at this from a broader perspective.  When we think of our talents, we think how we can use them for a greater good.  When we see others less fortunate, we think of ways we can help make things better.  As winter approaches and the dark season sets in, let us remember that for us there is no hibernation.  If anything, there is more work to be done.

Rob can be reached at [email protected].
Alumni Association Steering Committee

The Alumni Association steering committee has identified several projects for completion this year.  Each has staff support via an intern and several volunteers involved, but we'd welcome your energy and ideas, too.
  1. Upgrading the Leadership Spokane website. Intern Michael Imasua has a first draft.
  2. Survey of alumni: What do you want from the organization, what do you want to contribute, how are you involved in the community?  Contact Intern Michael Imasua.
  3. Alumni Mentor Program: We want to match new graduates with an alumni mentor.  We'll need to design a system.  Contact Intern Stephanie Jordan-Thompson.
  4. All-Alumni Reunion after Graduation: What should it look like, when and where should it be?  Contact Intern Vawn Borges.
  5. Speakers Bureau: We're looking for alumni to help tell the good news about Leadership Spokane.  We want to build a "presentation in a box," identify speakers and venues.  Contact Intern Meredith Coleman.
  6. Alumni access to tours, both for current class and new venues in our region.  We need to set up a system.  Contact Intern Meredith Coleman
Contact the appropriate intern at [email protected] to get involved.
Lean Office Training

Linda Finney, Executive Director

"Lean office" is a process of continuous improvement that examines office processes and looks for ways to add value and reduce waste.  It fits very well with Leadership Spokane's commitment to community stewardship and to donors and sponsors.  Leadership Spokane began the lean office process in 2005 and immediately realized cost savings in materials and staff time, which allowed us to improve customer service and programs.  This fall, it was time for a brush-up, since we had several new staff on the team.

Jennifer Salmon, Continuous Improvement Leader at Sterling Savings Bank and graduate of the Class of 2006, led the training.  Jennifer (pictured right) outlined the principles of continuous improvement:  understanding what's of value in the eyes of the customer, understanding our processes, how to reduce waste, how we use time, how to produce at the pull of the customer, and pursuing perfection on a daily basis.   We looked at reducing waste in movement (staff and materials), preventing errors, avoiding over-production of materials, reducing waiting time, just-in-time ordering, and avoiding movement or processing that doesn't add value to the customer.

I want to thank Jennifer and Sterling for the gift of her time and talent.  I'd also encourage you to explore Lean Office Training in your organization.
Please Send Referrals: Leadership Spokane Class of 2011

Leadership Spokane is currently seeking recruits for the adult Class of 2011.  Now is the time to capitalize on personal and professional development and contribute to the leadership team that is moving this community forward.

Our job is to engage, train and mobilize our region's emerging leaders.  Our goal is to ensure that the region has a corps of professionally trained and committed leaders, working together with vision and integrity.

Whether you're 25 or 65, new in town, just getting established in your career, or have lived in the region for some time, Leadership Spokane is an ideal vehicle to expand your knowledge of the region's infrastructure. You become cross trained by understanding how the system works and what impact your industry has on the system as a whole. You will gain access to and become an integral part of the key leadership network that is leading this community into the future.

Contact Executive Director Linda Finney with questions or to submit your referrals at [email protected].
Congratulations to alumni for their successes in the November election!

Proceeds will help to fund the Human Needs Day Scan Team Project.  The team is building a community garden at the Salvation Army, digging to begin early in the spring.  "Gardens provide fresh food for people, but so much more:  an opportunity to be outside, watch something grow, and connect with neighbors," says the Scan Team.  Watch the newsletter for developments and updates-in the meantime, get your recipe book!
