Message from the Chair Rob Crow, Class of 2006
Graduations abound in June, and this year I attended both the Leadership
Spokane graduation and that of my nephew from high school. There is an almost
universal process that new graduates go through on the big day. It starts with
relief that the "hard work" is done. As they have time to reflect on their
experiences they develop a sense of pride in their accomplishments. Eventually both feelings give way to the anxiety of having to
answer the question "now what?"
As I sit to write my first message as the
Chair of the Alumni Steering Committee, that question dominates my thoughts.
It was one of the central questions at the board retreat last year and one that
I feel we all need to answer in the upcoming year. I believe we have done an
excellent job as an organization in developing the program content.
My goal is
to facilitate the continuation of that experience through the Alumni Association.
Of course the main question leads to others. "What do we expect from the
Association?" "How can we keep people involved?" "What does the community
expect from us?" I call upon all graduates of the program to assist me, either
directly by serving on the Alumni Steering Committee with me or indirectly by
sending me your thoughts.
Rob can be reached at rcrow@lloydpans.com.

Conversation with a Donor
Name: Christopher Zilar
Company: Spokane
Regional Health District
Position: Program
Manager
Graduation year: Class of 2006Why do you support
Leadership Spokane financially and as a volunteer? LS was a powerful experience for
me. I made some lifelong friendships. I have been able to call upon several LS
graduates for professional help - even from people who were not in my own
class. There have been times where I gained access to someone simply because I
mentioned that I was in LS.
The main reason I support LS is because I truly believe in the LS mission. Leadership,
management, and administration are distinctly separate functions. It appears to
me that many supervisors or others in positions of power do not have the skills,
time or temperament to be true leaders. Leadership is a vital role of people in
authority. LS is a catalyst to leadership skill
development.
My personal politics tend to be
quite liberal. I work in public health, where we serve the underprivileged.
Thus, my work experiences lend supportive evidence for my political leanings.
LS broadened my experiences. I can more easily understand conservative views.
I still might disagree with conservative viewpoints, but I can respectfully
understand them. Further, I can better articulate my viewpoints in a way that
is palatable to conservatives. Why is it important
to donate your funds and time? I want to see LS succeed and reach
as many people in authority as possible. I want LS to reach a diverse group.
Ultimately, I see LS as playing a key role in Spokane's future
successes.What prompted you to
become a donor to Leadership Spokane? My wife and I take time every
January to discuss our responsibilities to the community. We decide which
non-profits we will donate to. There are so many worthy causes, and we receive
numerous phone calls from a wide variety of charities asking for
donations. We simply cannot donate to them all.
LS had an impact on my life. It seems reasonable that I give back. Admittedly,
I had not considered donating until I received an email from Allen
Battle.
What method do you
use to donate (monthly, quarterly, annually, etc.)? We use online banking. It is a
great way to make the commitment stick and never have to worry about it. I know
that every month, a check is automatically sent from my bank to LS. As
mentioned above, my wife and I review our financial commitments each
year. Online banking allows me to easily adjust the dollar amounts I donate, so
if we decide to increase our donations to LS, it would only take a few moments
of my time to make it happen--then I don't have to think about for another
year. You can donate to Leadership Spokane online through our PayPal account, or by contacting Beth at 321.3639. |
Meet our new summer intern, Rachel Struk I am
Rachel Struk, 19 years old. I live in
France, next to Lille, a really
pretty town north from Paris. I have a brother, whose name is Thomas. I have already moved two
times due to my father's job. But I like discovering new places, new people, and getting new habits. I am in a preparatory
class, and next year I will have
exams to enter a business school. So,
I had to improve my English, and I thought
that the best way to do this was to go to an English-speaking country.
So, I have decided to leave my lovely country and come
to see American life. I'll be here a month. Everyone in
Europe sees the United
States from a different point of view. If most
people love this mystical country and would like to be part of the American
dream, some do not. That is why I
wanted to discover it from my own perspective. Thanks to my
parents, my host
family, Compass USA and
Leadership Spokane, my dream came true. Both excited and
nervous, I've been completely plunged into the American
way of life and its culture. My first impression
was that in the United States, everything is enormous: cars, roads,
houses, stores, etc. And people are really kind. I was welcomed in
the best way ever; everyone here is so good to
me. It began at the airport, when I
was completely lost. A lady helped me and thanks to
her (and the fact that the plane was delayed), I
did not miss my connection. She told me that I was a lucky girl. She was right:
I was a lucky girl to be here.
My host
family name is Brandkamp. They live in Little Spokane, a pretty neighborhood. Chris and Lynne are the
parents; Megan, Lauren and Ryan are
the children. They seem to do a lot of activities together, such as riding or attending baseball matches.
It is a real pleasure to take part in it with them. They are very nice and so
funny. I really feel at ease, in my
new home.
The other
part of this exciting experience is my
job at Leadership Spokane. I'm working on the new alumni directory.
I'm very glad to help this organization
whose aim is to teach people how to become good citizens. In a context of global economic
crisis, solidarity, communication and service to one other are really important.
Plus, our environment is asking for
help. Leadership Spokane is here
to respond and encourage people to respond,
too. Being involved in the community and learning how
to cooperate with each other should be the first step to save the world and take
care of it.
I've just arrived, but
I am pretty sure the next days will be as interesting as the previous ones. In September, I will be back to school, and I will share with my friends all I've learned from this incredible
experience, both from a human and
linguistic aspect. |
Become a Member of the MAC
Harry Sladich, President & CEO of the Spokane Regional CVB,
called upon various regional organizations challenging them to ask their
employees to sign up to be members of the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture (MAC). Sladich first asked the
staff at the Spokane Regional CVB to get to know the MAC. To date, some 55 percent
of the Spokane Regional CVB staff members have become members of the MAC.
Memberships start at just $25 a year for a senior/student membership, $35 for an
individual membership and $75 for a household. "It is critical to our entire
region that this asset stays strong and viable," Sladich says. "I have
encouraged my employees to sign up for an annual individual or family membership
and it's been incredibly rewarding to see so many of them step forward and show
their commitment to the museum. Membership is a great way to be a tourist in
your own backyard and the latest exhibit (Out of this World) is really fun. We
all need to step up as a community and support the MAC." For membership information, go to www.northwestmuesum.org and click on Membership. |

Leadership Thought: Leading During the Financial Crisis

"I try to remain unattached to fear and advocate calm steadiness. I
continue to encourage and reassure my team that we are a strong company and a
shining star among our peers. I try to give as much time and energy as possible
to the greater community. I think it is time for us all to
focus on the true needs of those around us, a loving human collective banding
together to support the greater good and basic needs of ourselves and our Earth."
