Message from the Executive Director
"A Crisis is a Terrible Thing to Waste"
Paul
Romer, economist, 2004
Greetings!
We're
all agreed that times are pretty tough.
Most of us are living through the worst economic crisis of our
lives. However, I like what Max McKeown writes in November's Management Issues, "A
crisis is not the same as a disaster. It
is a 'crucial or decisive point or situation,' or a 'turning point.'"
Leadership
Spokane grads
and current students, we need you now, more than ever.
We
need your stewardship. A crisis gives us
a unique opportunity to evaluate how we are doing our work. Is a particular task or program central to
our mission? Are we allocating resources
properly? Are we using our people in the
most creative way? Can we meet a
particular objective by working with a partner?
We
need your sense of community. Crisis reminds
us how crucial our common sense of purpose is and underscores the importance of
civic responsibility. It reminds us how
much we depend upon one another, and that our strength as a community lies in
every single one of us working together for the good of all.
We need all of your
servant leadership skills so we can get on with "the hard stuff that is
essential to moving forward."

Leadership Thought
"I maintain a positive outlook. I don't mean a rose-colored glasses perspective, rather,
I am choosing the glass is more than half-full approach and I do what I
am capable of to help those I interact with be open to that. I find
that being positive is much more fun than the alternative and is
contagious, particularly if we focus on it together."
