A Recipe for Community - by Julie Sevig
In the October issue of "Gather" magazine (formerly called "Lutheran Woman Today"), Holy Trinity member Julie B. Sevig writes about the value of recipes handed down through the generations, and exchanged with friends and among members:
"Recipes connect us to saints of the kitchen and mark the passage of time.... well-worn recipes do for us something that a Google search or glossy cookbooks will never do. They connect us to a heritage and offer us an identity. They remind us of those who spent hours in the kitchen--cooking or baking alone or in groups, perhaps teaching us to do the same. For the recipes bear their names and the stains of batter or sauce, tears from a kitchen catastrophe, or a smudge of cream of mushroom soup or canned pumpkin. And that smudge makes all the difference."

Cookbooks for a Cause! We Need Your Recipes!
Please consider taking a moment today and writing down your favorite recipes! Holy Trinity is creating a church cookbook of our favorite recipes. We will be selling the books as a fundraising vehicle for our church to raise money during the holidays for our charitable outreach. We need many, many, many recipes to make OUR book and need your help ASAP. The deadline for us to receive all recipes and to put the cookbook into production is THIS SUNDAY 9/25. Please print out this recipe form, write down your favorite recipes, and bring to church THIS SUNDAY. Or take a quick moment this evening, write out your recipe and email it to Kristi Harreld. The more recipes you can provide, the better! You don't have to be a top chef to contribute--in fact, recipes you want to pass down from your family are perfect. Submit any and all recipes you want: your favorite meal, dessert, appetizer, you name it! In addition, we would LOVE to include simple fun recipes direct from the children in our congregation--in their own words. So submit those as well or have them bring to Sunday School this Sunday for inclusion in the book.
Thank you so much for being a part of our charitable fundraiser cookbook. Once complete it will be for sale to all at our December 4th Holy Trinity Christkindl Market, holiday bazzaar and fundraiser!

UPCOMING SUNDAY
| September 25 - Lectionary 26 Jesus' parable about two sons who don't do what they say reveals surprises in the reign of God, such as prostitutes and tax collectors going before others into God's kingdom. In the reading from Ezekiel the people question whether the ways of the Lord are unfair; instead they are to repent and turn to the Lord. Paul urges us to look to Christ as a model of humility, looking to the interests of others above our own. Nourished by the broken bread and shared cup, we offer our lives for the sake of our needy world. September 25 Schedule:
- 8:30 a.m. - Eucharist (about 45 minutes)
- 9:00 a.m. - New Member Orientation
- 9:15 a.m. - Choir Rehearsal
- 9:30 a.m. - Sunday School and Sunday Forum (below)
- 10:30 a.m. - Sung Eucharist
- 11:40 a.m. - Hospitality Team (ushers/greeters) meeting
- 11:45 a.m. - New Member Orientation (Cont...)
- 3:00 p.m. - Voice and Organ Recital (See Below)
Sunday Forum 9:30 a.m.
Politics and Religion - Barbara Wahler (in Passavant Hall) Our beliefs and values inform our views about politics and religion. These are typically two hard-to-discuss subjects. At this forum, Barbara Wahler--a therapist with Holy Trinity's Spiritual Life Center --leads an open discussion about politics' role in religion and how religion plays out in politics. Differing opinions are welcome and will be honored at this open forum.. Fair Trade Sales
Members will be selling fair trade goods such as coffee and chocolate at the back of the church between services and following the 10:30 service. Stop by and support a great ministry! Calling All Singers! The Fall season is underway, and with it comes the return of the Holy Trinity Choir to our 10:30 Liturgy each Sunday. Like every other ministry in our church, Choir would not happen if it were not for the faithful commitment of those who sing each Sunday! And, like every other ministry, we need additional people to share their gifts of time and talent to make it happen. Please consider becoming a part of this exciting and dynamic ministry at Holy Trinity! We rehearse on Sunday mornings at 9:15 and sing in the 10:30 service, and take one Sunday each month off. We're very flexible with your schedule and understand that no one can be present 100% of the time, so please don't let that deter you if you could help out! For more information, please speak to David Brackley, our Minister of Music, or ask any choir member. There are lots of exciting things planned for the coming months! Be a part of it all! Weekly readings Prayer of the Day God of love, giver of life, you know our frailties and failings. Give us your grace to overcome them, keep us from those things that harm us, and guide us in the way of salvation, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. |

Themes include: Martin Luther's witness to the center of worship; music in worship; participation as faith construction; redefining evangelism. A Calvin Institute of Worship grant provides books for all participants at no cost. Books are available now at the back of the church. Advent Mini-Retreat: Transitions Saturday, December 3, 9:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. The season of Advent is about endings and beginnings. Often we find ourselves in times of transition, whether it involves jobs, careers, relationships, family, location, living situation, or retirement. This retreat will provide a time for reflection and conversation around themes of change; waiting and preparation; endings and beginnings; spiritual resources for times of upheaval. To prepare, participants may read one of four recommended books. Information found here. Leader: Pr. Craig M. Mueller. CPR Class at Holy Trinity Ten people have now expressed a desire to enroll in a CPR class that will be held at HTLC on Saturday, October 29 from 9:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. in Passavant Hall. It will be conducted by Deft Resources who taught it for us about three years ago. It will include basic CPR, the Heimlech Manuver for choking and an introduction to the defibrillator or AED (automatic external defibrillator). The cost is $20. Please give this money to Kathryn Vigen or Josh in the office by October 16. If there are still people who would like to be included, there may be room for a few more. Sermon - September 11
| |
September 18, 2011 Lectionary 25a Matthew 20:1-16 David Weasley and Craig Mueller
EQUAL OPPORTUNITY
Equality is a word Americans love. Everyone deserves a chance to fulfill the American dream. Civil rights movements of the past several decades have brought greater equality to issues of race, gender, sexual orientation. Discrimination still exists--but many of us are committed to the basic truth that all human beings are created equal and deserve the benefits of life, liberty and happiness. Equality seems to be a tenant of our faith as well. Many churches have made welcoming statements, letting it be known that in God's eyes everyone is equal and everyone is welcome. In 1988 the ELCA set a goal that its membership would reflect not only its northern European roots, but American society. There was a desire that 10% of the ELCA would be non-white or people whose first language was not English. Sadly, the goal has not been met.

COMMEMORATIONS FOR THE WEEK Wednesday, September 21 - Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist Matthew (or Levi) was a tax collector in Capernaum for the Roman government. Tax collectors were frequently despised for dishonesty and for assisting the occupiers. Jesus nevertheless showed love for them, and chose Matthew to be a disciple. From Sundays and Seasons.com. BONHOEFFER'S COST Pastor - Pacifist - Nazi Resister
What is a moral person to do in a time of savage immorality? That question tormented Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a German clergyman of great distinction who actively opposed Hitler and the Nazis. His convictions cost him his life. Bonhoeffer, a highly regarded Lutheran minister who could have kept his peace and saved his life on several occasions, instead paid the ultimate price for his beliefs.
