| Greetings! | |
I can sense the energy all around me, and for the first time since I can remember, it doesn't really involve me. I'm talking, of course, about 'back-to-school', that phenomenon which sweeps the country just as temperatures (hopefully) begin to drop, as days get shorter, as we remember fondly the summer now all but behind us. I haven't directly experienced the excitement of new classrooms, teachers, classmates, and assignments myself for a couple of years, but this is the first time that my wife, Caroline, also shares the new-found status as graduate. To be honest, it's a bit weird. I do remember the feeling though, and can empathize with those who may be going for the first time as well as relate to those who are extremely excited to start; I've experience the whole spectrum of feelings that come with beginning a new chapter in one's education.
Here at Holy Trinity, things are kicking in to high gear as well, just take a look (carefully, I hope) at the long list below of events, announcements, and programming we have coming up! It's all very exciting, but can also be a bit overwhelming.
As we step into this new time and season, be sure to take a moment to breathe. It will all be okay! Appointments will be met, events will take place, homework will get done, meetings will happen. Just take each in stride and do the best you can!

Sermon - August 28

August 28, 2011 Lectionary 22a Matthew 16:21-28; Romans 12:9-21 Pr. Craig M. Mueller LOSING EVERYTHING Tough words about following Jesus. Peter doesn't want to hear any talk about suffering and he gets a good scolding. And then come these enigmatic words from Jesus: Deny yourself. Take up your cross. Those who lose their lives will find them.
Imagine what it would be like to lose everything. Threats of hurricane Irene have brought anxiety and careful preparation. No one wanted a repeat of Catrina! And the earthquake on the East coast earlier this week caused jitters, even if the damage was minimal. Yet thousands of families and kids did lose their homes and all their possessions after the tornado in Joplin, Missouri in May. What would it be look to lose everything and to start over? To be without all our stuff?

Sermon - September 4

September 4, 2011 Matthew 18:15-20 Lectionary 23a Pr. Craig M. Mueller
CONFLICT MANAGEMENT How do you deal with conflict? Do you avoid it? Do you confront the person you are angry with? Are you passive aggressive? I figured there would be some kind of "conflict management" inventory online. And of course, there were several. Many of you know I get into the Myers-Briggs personality inventory and others like it. I know there always limits. And people don't want to be put into a box. But I think they're kind of fun, and often enlightening.

MENTIONED IN SUNDAY'S SERMON
You can't make this up:
The limits of self-made religion by Lillian Daniel, from the Christian Century
A man recently told me about his faith life, as people are wont to do with ministers. He said, "I'm spiritual but not religious. I want to give you my testimony about why I do not attend church."
Now when I meet a math teacher, I don't feel the need to say I always hated math. When I meet a chef, I don't need to let it be known that I can't cook. When I meet a clown, I don't admit that I think clowns are scary. I keep that stuff to myself. But everybody loves to tell a minister what's wrong with the church-and it's usually some church that bears no relation to the one I serve.
