| Greetings! | |
Recently I realized - with some surprise - I haven't had a "real" full-time job since 2005! Especially in these difficult economic times, I'm amazed what a gift that's been. While I admit I do miss the guarantee of a regular paycheck and the safety net of some sort of healthcare, I've gained in more ways than I've lost. I've developed talents and skills I may not always have appreciated. With each downsizing, I've become clearer about my purpose and my ability to follow that. But the greatest gift has been the growth in my faith in - and reliance on - God to lead the way.
I truly feel like a lily of the field. As long as I stick to my own particular path - my call - God has provided, will provide for me. That's not to say it isn't scary to step from the highway, to follow the road less travelled. However, I've come to rely on and am very grateful for the support (in a variety of ways) of friends and family. In more prosperous times I'm afraid I may have missed those treasures, being more apt to revel in my accomplishments and self-reliance. It's been good for me to learn humility and gratitude.
In spiritual direction or psychotherapy, we often talk about the gifts to be found in difficulty. Sometimes the gift is simply the ability to look at the situation from a different perspective. Sometimes it's seeing an opportunity for growth and change, an invitation to move forward into the unknown. For me, the past several years have been a blessing - a time to explore, try new things, to take a genuine leap of faith and believe that I will be taken care of, provided for... to listen to that "still, small voice". As a result I've felt - to quote Pr Miller's recent sermon - "the Kingdom of Heaven like rain falling down when you least expect it". Blessings do indeed abound!

NEXT TWO SUNDAYS
| |
July 31 - Lectionary 18 In today's first reading God invites all who are hungry or thirsty to receive food and drink without cost. Jesus feeds the hungry multitude and reveals the abundance of God. At the eucharistic table we remember all who are hungry or poor in our world today. As we share the bread of life, we are sent forth to give ourselves away as bread for the hungry.
July 31 Schedule:
- 9:30 a.m. - Eucharist
- Music: Cantor - Sean Diller; French Horn - A.J. Yoeckel
- 10:30 a.m. - Coffee Fellowship in Garden (Weather Permitting)
Prayer of the Day Glorious God, your generosity waters the world with goodness, and you cover creation with abundance. Awaken in us a hunger for the food that satisfies both body and spirit, and with this food fill all the starving world; through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
August 7 - Lectionary 19
Elijah finds the presence of God not in earthquake, wind, or fire, but in the sound of sheer silence. When the disciples face a great storm on the sea, they cry out with fear. Jesus says: "Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid." Amid the storms of life, we gather to seek the calm presence of Christ that soothes our fears. In comforting words of scripture and in the refreshing bread and cup of the eucharist, God grants us peace and sends us forth to be a sign of God's presence to others August 7 Schedule:
- 9:30 a.m. - Eucharist
- Music: Cantor - Michelle Miller; Saxophone - Josh Judd-Herzfeldt; Viola - Sean Diller
- 10:30 a.m. - Coffee Fellowship in Garden (Weather Permitting)
Cubs Home Game August 7!! Parking can be difficult Arrive early, carpool or take public transit.
Prayer of the Day O God our defender, storms rage around and within us and cause us to be afraid. Rescue your people from despair, deliver your sons and daughters from fear, and preserve us in the faith of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

SOCIAL MINISTRY NEWS - REFUGEE FAMILY
|
Let us welcome another refugee family to Chicago.
Thank you all for your help in selecting household items to donate for our Refugee family home - we almost have everything covered! However, we only have a little over one week to pull together all needed items and there are still approximately 20 items that need to be donated. Have any furniture items you're looking to get rid of? Let us know as furniture donations are needed as well! Too busy to purchase items for the family? Consider a monetary donation to help us cover the costs in purchasing un-claimed items and towards the family's first months rent; simply put in offering plate and write "RefugeeOne" on the envelope. Please stop by the display at the back of the church following the service this Sunday and consider helping out in any way you can. In addition, a reminder to all that have pulled blue tags of items to donate that we need ALL items back here at church by Sunday August 7th or sooner! For any questions about the refugee family sponsorship, donations, or to help volunteer with apartment set-up and greeting the family once they arrive, contact Pete Hillman. We are still waiting on the specifics of our sponsored family and their exact arrival date, yet are expecting an arrival late in August. We will update all as soon as we hear! Thank you very much! Recap: · Holy Trinity will be sponsoring a refugee family · Choose items from display in back of church and bring back by August 7 · Be ready to help by picking the family up, setting up the apartment, or showing them around the city About Refugee One: On a daily basis, refugees and immigrants are quietly making progress throughout the Chicago region. There are over 11 million refugees in the world. Each has experienced the terror of war and suffered immeasurable losses--loved ones, home, job, security, and a sense of hope for the future. Uprooted and torn from the communities that sustained them, they are haunted by their past and bewildered by their future--their lives are forever changed. Everyday, RefugeeOne is involved in welcoming people to Chicago who are fleeing destruction and despair. An affiliate of Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service, RefugeeOne's services address the social, emotional and material needs of refugees and immigrants. Holy Trinity Lutheran has worked closely with RefugeeOne by co-sponsoring a refugee family arrival each summer / early fall. |

July 17, 2011 Lectionary 16a Romans 8:12-25; Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43 Pr. Craig Mueller GROANERS WELCOME
Are you a groaner? Do you groan under the weight of the world? There are other evocative "gr" words: grumble, grouse, growl, gripe, grovel, grapple. But none of them is quite as-well, visceral-as a groan.
A groan-that "deep, inarticulate sound that expresses pain, distress, complaint, disapproval." You know what I mean. Let's do a communal groan ... Maybe you groan in traffic. Or when you can't figure out how to set up your computer. Or when the political impasse in Washington goes from bad to worse. Or when you're having an argument. Or when you're at the end of your rope.

July 24, 2011 Lectionary 17a Pr. Michelle Miller
My new favorite t-shirt simply says "gotta run." I love it because it fits perfectly, is my favorite shade of green, and it makes me feel like a runner. It's true I've been running (walking/jogging really) for a couple of years now, but I never seem to get past a hurdle of running for an extended period of time...Usually about 5 minutes. Then I need to walk and catch my breath. And I come up with all kinds of excuses not to run, "It's too hot, it's too cold, the sun is too bright or it's too humid." And there's no way I'm going out if it's snowing or raining! I guess I'm not a fair weather runner, but more of a perfect weather runner.
The ipod training program I'm using challenged me yesterday to run for 25 minutes...5X the amount of time I feel comfortable with. I almost didn't go. Too wet. But I did it, hopping over puddles along the way. Just as I was finishing, the rain came pouring down. I couldn't believe it! I was running in the rain! Totally unexpected...super refreshing; joy and laughter emerged as I pondered the irony. And it energized me to run even more than required.
The kingdom of heaven is like rain pouring down when you least expect it.

Handel's great work, Messiah, is a setting of scriptural texts.
