Greetings!

"Rainy days and Mondays always get me down..."

I was a huge fan of the Carpenters when I was younger--and still am. And even though I liked to hear Karen sing "Rainy days and Mondays," I can't say that the lyrics accurately expressed my outlook. I have always loved rainy days, cool weather, autumn and winter. Call me weird, but I guess somebody has to like "bad weather"! The bigger picture, however, relates to how any of us choose to look at life. I have been told many times that "happiness is a choice." I'm not sure that I completely agree with that statement, but there is a great deal of truth in it.

I have lived long enough and experienced enough life to know that there is little, if anything in this world that I can really count on. "Death and taxes," I can hear someone say! True enough! But that is little consolation. So, what does one do when discouragement strikes, friends fail, loved ones die, days are gloomy, and plans go awry? There was a day when I would have given a very simple "pat answer" to that question, but I know now that the solution is not all that simple. We each feel things at different levels and are affected by various aspects of life in different ways.

However, I do think that there are at least a couple of suggestions that might be helpful. I find that when my outlook is dreary it is sometimes because I am dwelling on negatives and failing to see the big picture. At times like that, finding someone who needs a word of encouragement or a helping hand and reaching out to them is one way that my issues get put into perspective. There is no minimizing the need to process grief, and every reason to deal with the causes of discouragement head on. But in the meantime, seeking to be God's hands, God's smile, God's messenger in this challenging world can help me see things in a better perspective, and at the same time make someone else's world a better place! That's a win-win!

Avoiding people, places and things that cause me to sink in my outlook is another strategy that makes a big difference to me. Whether we like it or not, we emulate those with whom we spend the most time. Wise people surround themselves with others who in various ways can enrich and teach them. At times like this, I thank God for our community of faith at Holy Trinity. Here we have a built-in resource of caring Christians who share similar goals and aspirations, and accept us as we are.

There is no magic solution to "rainy days and Mondays," and sometimes it seems we have more than our share of both. But God has graciously provided ways for us to rise above our circumstances, and no matter how many people disappoint us, we can be certain that God will not fail us. Georg Neumark (1621-1681) said it well:

"Sing, pray, and keep God's ways unswerving, offer your service faithfully. Trust heaven's word; though undeserving, you'll find God's promise true to be. This is our confidence indeed: God never fails in time of need."

NEXT SUNDAY: Sixth Sunday of Easter

Easter 5

Jesus does not leave his followers orphaned. Through the Holy Spirit Jesus comes to abide with his disciples of every generation. As Pentecost draws near, we are reminded that the risen Christ dwells in us as the Spirit of truth. We receive this Spirit in baptism and pray that in our gathering around the Lord's table the Spirit will transform us to be the body of the risen Christ in the world.

ELCA Disaster Response: Tornado in Joplin, MO

tornadoDear sisters and brothers in Christ,

An outbreak of tornadoes tore across the Midwest this weekend, leaving a path of destruction from Texas to Minnesota.

Especially hard-hit is Joplin, Mo., where a powerful tornado leveled parts of the community, killing at least 89 people. Residents say the city is completely unrecognizable.

The building that housed an ELCA congregation has been destroyed, according to its pastor. Please keep the Rev. Bill Pape and the people of Peace Lutheran Church in Joplin in your prayers.

This outbreak is one of several destructive storms this spring. Communities throughout the Midwest and South have also faced widespread damage due to floods and severe storms.

ELCA Disaster Response is already assessing the situation in Joplin and other areas affected by severe storms and flooding. Your gifts are needed to help provide help provide for immediate and long-term needs of those affected by these disasters.

All of your gifts-100 percent-designated for "U.S. Severe Storms" will be used for emergency and long-term assistance following these storms. Please give generously at the ELCA website or the Holy Trinity website and continue to pray for those whose lives have been uprooted by this disaster.

Sincerely,

The Rev. Daniel Rift
Director, ELCA World Hunger and Disaster Appeal

Last Sunday's Sermon

The Fifth Sunday of Easter
May 22, 2011
Pr. Michelle L. Miller

Surprise! We're still here. I couldn't help but look around this morning and try to figure out who's missing. Of course, if anyone is missing from church this morning, it isn't because of the rapture. They've likely chosen to sleep in, or had other plans for this beautiful Sunday morning.

No matter where I turned this past week, it seemed people were talking about the rapture, which Harold Camping predicted would happen yesterday at about 6 p.m., local time. Nearly every friend on Facebook referenced the prediction. I overheard a conversation between co-workers at Office Max talking about the end of the world. The morning "news" programs and even NPR had stories about this radio preacher and his 20,000 or so followers who gave up everything - homes, finances, even family relationships - because they believed that the end of the world was near and they would be "taken up to heaven," while the rest of us are left behind. Mostly, I'm surprised by how much attention this man's rapture prediction received!
