| Greetings! | |
Earlier this spring, I attended a three-day psychotherapy conference in Washington, DC. Timely topics such as "The New Brain Research", "Therapy as a Wisdom Tradition", "Couples Communication Styles", and "The Internet's Impact on our Personal Relationships", were presented.
One of the key-note speakers among these clinical and spiritual energies of the conference, was the poet David Whyte. He is one of my favorite poets and to hear his luminous, lilting Irish accent in reading his own words is a captivating experience. His weaving of myth, spirituality, psychology, humor and his own inner journey awakens us to the truths of our own stories (You may remember his name from a sermon Craig gave earlier in the year). His key-note address was entitled "Crossing the Unknown Sea: Crucial Conversations for a Complex World." As a poet, he encourages us to step gently out of what we know, or our 'comfort zone,' into this broader unknown horizon. He invites us into our own creative inner selves using words as a guide to 'excavate' this inner terrain. Below are two poems by David Whyte, I hope you might enter, enjoy and explore.
~Karol Weigelt
... To be human is to become visible while carrying what is hidden as a gift to others....
It doesn't interest me if there is one God or many gods. I want to know if you belong or feel abandoned. If you know despair or can see it in others. I want to know if you are prepared to live in the world with its harsh need to change you. If you can look back with firm eyes saying this is where I stand. I want to know if you know how to melt into that fierce heat of living falling toward the center of your longing. I want to know if you are willing to live, day by day, with the consequence of love and the bitter unwanted passion of your sure defeat. I have heard, in that fierce embrace, even the gods speak of God. |

NEXT SUNDAY: Fourth Sunday of Easter
|
Today is sometimes called "Good Shepherd Sunday." Jesus is called the "gate" of the sheep in today's gospel. The risen Christ opens the way to abundant life. He anoints our heads with oil and guides us beside the still waters of our baptism. Each Sunday he spreads a feast before us in the midst of the world's violence and war. We go forth to be signs of the resurrection and extend God's tender care to all creation.
Schedule this Sunday
- 8:30 a.m. - Simple Eucharist
- 9:15 a.m. - Choir Rehearsal
- 9:30 a.m. - Adult Forum and Sunday School
- 10:30 a.m. - Sung Eucharist and Holy Baptism
- 11:45 a.m. - Food4thought
Cubs Home Game!
Take public transit, walk, or carpool - parking can be difficult! Sunday Forum - 9:30 a.m.
Jesus and the 'I am' of John's Gospel - Carol LaHurd More than any other gospel, John sees Jesus through the eyes of the late First Century church. In John 10 Jesus declares, "I am the good shepherd." The various "I am" statements in John help us understand Jesus as the light of the world, the bread of life, the true vine, and one with the God who says "I am who I am" to Moses in the Exodus. This week's lessons Prayer for Sunday
O God our shepherd, you know your sheep by name and lead us to safety through the valleys of death. Guide us by your voice, that we may walk in certainty and security to the joyous feast prepared in your house, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. |

Last Sunday's Sermon
| |
The Third Sunday of Easter May 8, 2011 Luke 24:13-25 Pr. Craig M. Mueller TAKE IT TO HEART It was seven miles from Jerusalem to Emmaus. The walk there made all the difference in the world. You could say that for Cleopas and the other disciple, they journeyed from despair to hope. It doesn't seem far at all, but for most of us there is a great distance between head and heart. Many of our doubts are in our heads. They are about doctrines. How can I believe in the Virgin Birth, or the Trinity, the Resurrection, not to mention life after death? In our scientific, analytic, verifiable age, we have relegated faith to a compendium of beliefs. Beliefs as "files" in the head, if you will.
