Holy Trinity Lutheran Church
Greetings!

The capacity to express a wide range of emotion is one of the unique characteristics of being human. Last Sunday's liturgy held in tension an exuberant and joyful procession with palmcrossexclamations of "hosanna," and cries of "crucify him," amid the impending desolation and sorrow at the suffering and death of Jesus. A few folks have mentioned to me that they find this liturgy emotionally exhausting or even confusing.

Yet during this most holy week we juxtapose polarities, knowing that to be human is to experience both life and death, light and darkness, despair and hope, bondage and freedom. Certainly the narrative of Jesus' death and resurrection includes all these themes. Unfortunately, most of us grew up with a rather simple approach to Holy Week: being sad on Good Friday and happy on Easter. Yet the story of Jesus--and indeed, the human story-is more nuanced than that. Sorrow and joy intermingle in ways beyond our conscious awareness.

We would do well to consider the Jewish way of approaching Passover. Rather than going back to the past to enter the story, and imagine what it feels like to be there, participants are invited to reflect on the ways that Passover themes of liberation and hope intersect with their own lives and with the events in our world today.

I invite you to spend some time this week reflecting on your own life and our world in this year 2011. Where do we see the marks of bondage, suffering, loss, and despair? Are there signs of freedom, new life, and resurrection? What are we being invited to let go of, that we might die and rise with Christ? At the Vigil of Easter a wondrous plethora of stories and images will connect baptism with our passover with Christ from death to new life.

I look forward to gathering with you on the great Three Days of Jesus' death and resurrection, especially the liturgies of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Vigil of Easter. If there is any time that we need to be together as a community, it is for these services. May these days renew our faith and transform our world.

Blessed Easter,
~Pr. Craig M. Mueller

How Can I Keep from Singing? ~ David Brackley
Following the 10:30 a.m. service; lunch provided
How does a closeted, gay, life-long conservative evangelical become an Episcopalian and end up in a Reconciling in Christ congregation like Holy Trinity? What part did hymnody play in this all-encompassing transformation? Come and find out as Holy Trinity's minister of music, David Brackley, shares some thoughts from his own history and from the hymnal.

COMMEMORATIONS FOR THE WEEK

Thursday, April 21 - Anselm, Bishop of Canterbury, died 1109
This eleventh-century monk was one of the greatest theologians of the Middle Ages. He is remembered for emphasizing the maternal aspects of God, and for the theory that the Son of God became human in order to make the necessary payment for our sin.

Friday, April 22 - Day of the Creation (Día de la Creación) (LLC)
This observance invites us to notice and give God thanks for the wonders of the created universe. As stewards of that creation, we are also challenged to be careful in our use of it.

Saturday, April 23 - Toyohiko Kagawa, renewer of society, died 1960
Born in Kobe, Japan, Kagawa was orphaned as a young child. Later, when he became Christian, he was disowned by the rest of his family. Wishing to bring Christian principles into society, he worked among poor people, established schools and hospitals, and worked for peace.

Monday, April 25, 2011 - Mark, Evangelist
He was not numbered among the twelve apostles, yet Mark was probably a member of the early church community. The gospel that bears his name is the shortest and most direct, and many scholars think it was the first to be written.

WHO KILLED JESUS?

Across the centuries of western Christian history, an unfortunate answer to this question has been only too commonplace.Citing the passion narratives in the New Testament gospels, particularly Matthew and John (which we read this and every Good Friday), too many have answered simply, "the Jews." This has fueled anti-Semitism, leading to an unjust stereotype of Jewish people as "Christ-killers" and contributing to travesties including but not limited to insults, threats, boycotts, pogroms, and even the Holocaust in Nazi Germany.
