| Greetings! | |
If you, like me, are not originally from Chicago, this time of year can be especially difficult. It's late March-officially spring-yet we're still facing freezing temperatures and flurries. Just when I thought I could put away my wool sweaters, it's time to bust them out again!
Lent sometimes feels like that tentative spring. Easter is on the horizon, yet we're still in the midst of our Lenten disciplines. We struggle to be more reflective, to value the good and let go of what is unhealthy. But will there ever be a payoff?
We struggle and fight but sometimes it seems like we can't get a break. The "to do" list gets longer, the bills pile up and we forget healthy habits and opt for the path of least resistance. And the season gets colder--family members fall ill, jobs are lost, finances shrink. Are we trapped in perpetual winter?
Yet, as I walk around the city, I am starting to see shoots of green. Ever so slowly, flowers are starting to blossom. They're tiny, purple and white little blooms, but I know that they're the first signs of what will be a riot of color in the coming weeks.
So there is hope in this cold spring. Just a quick glance at the 10-day forecast shows warmer temperatures on the way. And as we continue through Lent, perhaps we should start looking for those small signs of hope in our own lives. They are different for each of us, of course, but they all point to a future of warmth. For us Christians, we need only look to the cross for a sign of the coming resurrection of Easter. It will come, perhaps sooner than we think.

UPCOMING SUNDAY: Fourth Sunday in Lent
|
Baptism is sometimes called enlightenment. The gospel for this Sunday is the story of the man born blind healed by Christ. I was blind, but now I see, declares the man. In baptism God opens our eyes to see the truth of who we are: God's beloved sons and daughters. As David was anointed king of Israel, in baptism God anoints our head with oil, and calls us to bear witness to the light of Christ in our daily lives.
Schedule this Sunday:- 8:30 a.m. - Simple Eucharist
- 9:15 a.m. - Choir Rehearsal
- 9:30 a.m. - Adult Forum and Sunday School
- 10:30 a.m. - Sung Eucharist
- 11:45 a.m. - Fair Trade Sales
**CUBS HOME GAME** Parking can be difficult - arrive early, walk or take public transit Sunday Forum Lent Book Discussion: Rediscovering Values Pastor Craig Mueller - 9:30 a.m. (St. Mark's Room - upstairs) During Lent we discuss themes from Holy Trinity's 2011 book for Lent, Rediscovering Values. For Sunday, read chapters 11-13. Lessons for Next Sunday Prayer of the Day Bend your ear to our prayers, Lord Christ, and come among us. By your gracious life and death for us, bring light into the darkness of our hearts, and anoint us with your Spirit, for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Thank you for volunteering and sharing in this wonderful event! Dream Group MeetingI usually can remember my dreams upon waking but it wasn't until I had a dream come true, moment by moment, that I gave my dreams any attention. I have to say, I was a little freaked out and scared because this wasn't just a normal dream. It was what I considered a nightmare. Something that woke me up in the middle of the night in distress and the only way I was able to fall back asleep was to tell myself I didn't recognize the people or the place so I shouldn't worry. I have since learned after joining Holy Trinity's Dream Group that what I had was called a pre-cognitive dream and that their is no timeline in our dreams - you can have dreams from the past, present or even future. Being able to remember your dreams can often be the first step in understanding a deeper part of yourself and what your subconscious is trying to tell you. If you are interested in learning more about your dreams and the meaning behind them, please consider joining the next Dream Group meeting at HTLC TONIGHT, Wednesday, March 30th @ 7:30 p.m. ~Janelle Peterson Holy Week Schedule April 17 - Palm/Passion Sunday Liturgy - 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. Stations of the Cross for Families - 9:30 a.m. April 21 - Maundy Thursday Liturgy - 7:30 p.m. April 22 - Good Friday Liturgy - 7:30 p.m. April 23 - Great Vigil of Easter - 7:30 p.m. Champagne reception to follow April 24 - Easter Day - Festival Eucharists at 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. NOTE: Cubs 1:20 p.m. home game, plan accordingly Annual Easter Party Saturday April 23, 9:30-11:00 a.m. Families with young children are invited to join us for a fun gathering at Holy Trinity. | LAST SUNDAY'S SERMON | |
The Third Sunday in Lent March 27, 2011 John 4:5-42 Pr. Craig M. Mueller
AMAZING OFFER It's quite an offer that Jesus makes: Drink the water that I give. And you will never be thirsty again. When you think of our desire for instant gratification, there's quite a hook in that. Maybe it was no different for the ancient Israelites. As they wandered in the wilderness, they were thankful to be delivered from bondage. But whenever God did not meet their every need on demand, they whined. Take today's first reading: there is a shortage of water. They are dying of thirst. And they demand of Moses: Give us water to drink! Now! It's so great a scene you can almost see it being made into a commercial. God provides a rock. All you have to do is strike it. Water flows. And the people drink.
