| Greetings! | |
I watched this video posted on Facebook with my mouth hanging wide open. I just could not wrap my brain around what I was seeing. The videographer captured the Tsunami from the first trickles of water through the streets, to raging flood waters, floating cars and semi-trucks and eventually the destruction of buildings, as the whole town below him was wiped out.
The images and stories of people affected by the tsunami have captured our hearts and our prayers. During times of disaster, we can count on the ELCA Disaster Response to assist with immediate and long term needs for those affected in the region. Information about ELCA Disaster Response and how we can help are included below.
ELCA Response:
The ELCA stands in solidarity with its companion on the ground, the Japan Evangelical Lutheran Church (JELC), as they assess the safety and security of its members and communities served by the church. Through its predecessor bodies, the ELCA has been present in Japan since 1892 and will accompany the JELC in its planned response to this disaster. Elsewhere in the Pacific region, the ELCA remains in contact with companions in the Pacific Islands, South America and throughout the coastal region of the U.S. to respond as needed to the tsunamis caused by the earthquake.
What you can do:
Pray:
As the news of the earthquake was announced at the leadership conference in Malaysia, a representative from the Australian Evangelical Lutheran Church, a church that has recently had to deal with massive flooding and an earthquake in New Zealand, shared that of all the outpouring of help from the international community received, "prayer was the most important gift." Ally Streed, an ELCA missionary deployed by the Global Mission unit and stationed in Saitama, stated, "Please keep the people of Japan (and just Japan in general) in your thoughts and prayers. This is the biggest earthquake they've seen since the Kobe earthquake of 1995."
Give:
Those who give to shared mission support and ELCA World Hunger are already helping to fund the ongoing work in Japan and the deployment of mission personnel through ELCA Global Mission. Special needs and opportunities have arisen in response to the current crisis. The ELCA invites gifts to ELCA Disaster Response in order to continue its work in Japan and surrounding region.
You may provide support in the following ways:
- Give by phone at 800-638-3522
- Donate online
- Make a check out to HT with 'Disaster Relief' in the memo
Thank you for your prayerful consideration.

UPCOMING SUNDAY: First Sunday in Lent
|
During Lent we journey with all those around the world who will be baptized at the Easter Vigil. In today's gospel Jesus tells Nicodemus that he must be born of water and Spirit. At the font we are given a new birth as daughters and sons of God. As God made a covenant with Abraham, in baptism God promises to raise us up with Christ to new life. From worship we are sent forth to proclaim God's love for all the world. Schedule this Sunday:- 8:30 a.m. - Simple Eucharist
- 9:15 a.m. - Choir Rehearsal
- 9:30 a.m. - Adult Forum and Sunday School
- 10:30 a.m. - Sung Eucharist
- Music: Choir; Soloists - Natalie Sadjak, Brian VonRueden, Kirsten Leslie; Holy Trinity Strings
Sunday ForumLent Book Discussion: Rediscovering Values Pastor Craig Mueller - 9:30 a.m. (St. Mark's Room - upstairs) During Lent we discuss themes from Holy Trinity's 2011 book for Lent, Rediscovering Values. For Sunday, read chapters 3-6. Music this SundayThe Holy Trinity Choir and Strings will perform portions of Schubert's beloved Mass in G Major as a part of the liturgy at 10:30 a.m., Sunday, March 20, 2011. Soloists Natalie Ford and Brian VonRueden will assist, and all is under the direction of Minister of Music David Brackley. In addition, guest soloist Kirsten Leslie will sing two of George Frideric Händel's Nine German Arias as pre-service music. Lessons for Next Sunday Prayer of the Day O God, our leader and guide, in the waters of baptism you bring us to new birth to live as your children. Strengthen our faith in your promises, that by your Spirit we may lift up your life to all the world through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

SMELLS AND BELLS
| |
Nathan D. Mitchell says that his earliest memories of church are attached to smells: the incense, the musty odor of the cloth veiling the priest in the confessional, the aroma of the floor wax in the corridor leading to the parish school. There is, of course, a close connection between smell and memory. Mitchell laments that so much liturgical reform and renewal makes intelligibility of the faith the centerpiece rather than sensory perception. "The unintentional consequence is a liturgy which 'explains' rather than evokes, speaks rather than sings, drones rather than dances, and skulks rather than soars" (Worship, January). ~As quoted in Christian Century, March 8, 2011, p. 9.

This Lent Holy Trinity is offering two discussion groups especially for young adults in their 20's and 30's. 1. BIBLE AND LIFE: Tuesday evenings Does the Bible contradict itself? Why did only these gospels make the cut? Did Paul really say that?? This Bible study will examine how we read scripture and use it in our everyday lives. We will look at our sacred texts with both critical and faithful eyes. We will discuss the broad biblical canon as well as specific texts. Bring your tough questions and be ready for challenging answers. To find out where the next meeting will be click below.
2. BOOK DISCUSSION ON REDISCOVERING VALUES: Sundays at noon
Read and discuss Holy Trinity's book for Lent, Rediscovering Values. We will meet Sundays after church. Led by Seminarian Steven Dickens.
Sign-up for either group here.
Annual Easter Party Saturday April 23, 9:30-11:00 a.m. Families with young children are invited to join us for a fun gathering at Holy Trinity. Children and their parent(s) will enjoy the craft activities, decorating Easter eggs, and searching for treasures in the garden. Please e-mail Pastor Michelle Miller if you plan to attend.
Easter Party Volunteers 4 - 6 more volunteers are needed to host the Easter Party. We need craft helpers, egg fillers and hiders, and snack preparers. Having non-parents participate in the celebration enables parents to be with their own children and fully enjoy the party. E-mail Pastor Michelle Miller to volunteer.

| LAST SUNDAY'S SERMON | |
The First Sunday in Lent March 13, 2011 Pr. Craig M. Mueller
REDO IT It's not the result you want. A paper that has the words: redo. Who wants to fail and have to retake the driving test to get a license? Or retake the bar exam? Who wants to have to redo a job because your boss says it isn't thorough enough? Who wants to reload the dishwasher because your spouse doesn't think the dishes will get clean? Who wants to re-clean your room because your dad or mom doesn't think it's good enough? Sometimes Lent feels that way. Here we are again. Do we have to do it over? It's too hard. It's too much work. It's too serious. Isn't life all grace? Doesn't God love us no matter what?

COMMEMORATIONS FOR THE WEEK Thursday, March 17 - Patrick, bishop, missionary to Ireland, died 461 A native of Britain, Patrick was kidnapped by pirates at age sixteen and sold into slavery in Ireland. After a few years, he escaped, returned home, and entered the ministry. Returning to Ireland, he successfully served as a bishop and missionary there.
Saturday, March 19 - Joseph, Guardian of Jesus Though the Bible tells us little about the husband of Jesus' mother Mary, we know that he was a carpenter or builder by trade. He is also shown as being devoted both to God and to Mary and Jesus. It is assumed that he died before Jesus became an adult.
Monday, March 21, 2011 - Thomas Cranmer, Bishop of Canterbury, martyr, died 1556 Cranmer's lasting achievement is contributing to and overseeing the creation of the Book of Common Prayer, which remains (in revised form) the worship book of the Anglican Communion. He was burned at the stake under Queen Mary for his support of the Protestant Reformation.
Tuesday, March 22 - Jonathan Edwards, teacher, missionary to American Indians, died 1758 A Puritan minister in Connecticut, Edwards is remembered as being a great preacher. Though his most famous sermon talks at length about hell, he was more concerned with God's love. He served both as missionary to the Housatonic people in Massachusetts, and as president of the future Princeton University.
