| Greetings! | |
Ash Wednesday is the most difficult day in the church year. The dust on our foreheads calls to mind the words spoken at the end of a human life, as earth is cast on a coffin or urn with these words: "we commit his/her body to the ground ... earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust."
Strange as it is, we come again to the great mystery: death leads to life. In all the great spiritual traditions the way to fullness of life is always through death--through trusting, through emptying, through letting go, through surrender, through embracing the many losses and "little deaths" that come our way. Maybe that mystery led the poet T.S. Eliot to write: "What we call the beginning is often the end / And to make an end is to make a beginning. / The end is where we start from."
Ashes on our foreheads. Earth cast on a coffin. Endings, death, mortality. But from the earth will come the rebirth of spring. From dirt will come the glorious flowers and new life that will delight our spirits. From the ashes of our lives will come forth a renewal and a transformation of which we cannot even yet imagine. The destination of Lent--the purpose of Lent--is nothing less than the new fire of Easter, the water of baptism, the food of the promised land. Yet Easter will not be the end of our journey. It will be yet another beginning. And for this beginning our hearts long.
- Pr. Craig M. Mueller

UPCOMING SUNDAY: First Sunday in Lent
|
Today's gospel tells of Jesus' temptation in the desert. His forty-day fast becomes the basis of our Lenten pilgrimage. In the early church Lent was a time of intense preparation for those to be baptized at the Easter Vigil. This catechetical focus on the meaning of faith is at the heart of our Lenten journey to the baptismal waters of Easter. Hungry for God's mercy, we receive the bread of life to nourish us for the days ahead. Schedule this Sunday:- 8:30 a.m. - Simple Eucharist
- 9:15 a.m. - Choir Rehearsal
- 9:30 a.m. - Adult Forum and Sunday School
- 10:30 a.m. - Sung Eucharist with the Great Litany in Procession
Sunday ForumLent Book Discussion: Rediscovering Values Pastor Craig Mueller - 9:30 a.m. (St. Mark's Room - upstairs) During Lent we discuss themes from Holy Trinity's 2011 book for Lent, Rediscovering Values. For Sunday, read the introduction and chapters 1 and 2. Fair Trade SalesBetween services and following the 10:30 service, members will be selling fair trade goods such as coffee and chocolate. Stop by and see what they have! Lessons for Next Sunday Prayer of the Day Lord God, our strength, the struggle between good and evil rages within and around us, and the devil and all the forces that defy you tempt us with empty promises. Keep us steadfast in your word, and when we fall, raise us again and restore us through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Join In An Online Discussion of Our Lenten Book We are trying something new this year, hoping to 'keep up with the times'! Since we have so many people reading our book for Lent, Rediscovering Values, we thought we would try out an online discussion type format in addition to our other discussion groups. Discuss the book as well as other questions regarding the practices, traditions, and meanings of Lent.
Follow the below steps to get set up:
1) Follow this link to the group: HTLC Discussion Group. 2) Click "sign in to view this group" 3) Use an existing Google account or create one, it's quick, easy and free. To create an account, click the button, and follow the steps on the next page--you can use any email address you like. 4) Once you finish signing in/up, you should be returned to the group. Simply click on 'Join Group', choose your options, then click 'Join this group'. 5) You should see 'HTLC Discussion Group' listed under My Groups now. You can click on a post and reply to discuss on various questions, or start a new topic and ask your own question! 6) Bookmark this page and/or look for the link on Holy Trinity's homepage and in the e-news each week.
If you have any problems with this process (it can be a bit tricky), feel free to call Josh in the office (773.248.1233) or email him. Special Music Event at Holy Trinity, March 20The Holy Trinity Choir and Strings will perform portions of Schubert's beloved Mass in G Major as a part of the liturgy at 10:30 a.m., Sunday, March 20, 2011. Soloists Natalie Ford and Brian VonRueden will assist, and all is under the direction of Minister of Music David Brackley.
In addition, guest soloist Kirsten Leslie will sing two of George Frideric Händel's Nine German Arias as pre-service music that day. Miss Leslie, originally from near Chicago, just returned to the area from Europe and New York City where she soloed several times at Carnegie Hall. She has performed as singer and actress in various parts of the world, having toured as a soloist throughout Italy, Holland, Austria, Germany and the Czech Republic.
Dr. Benjamin M. Stewart, Gordon A. Braatz Assistant Professor of Worship and Dean of the Chapel at Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago will be the guest preacher that morning. Dr. Stewart and his family are members of Holy Trinity. Two Young Adult Lenten Groups
This Lent Holy Trinity is offering two discussion groups especially for young adults in their 20's and 30's. 1. BIBLE AND LIFE: Tuesday evenings Does the Bible contradict itself? Why did only these gospels make the cut? Did Paul really say that?? This Bible study will examine how we read scripture and use it in our everyday lives. We will look at our sacred texts with both critical and faithful eyes. We will discuss the broad biblical canon as well as specific texts. Bring your tough questions and be ready for challenging answers. This group will have its first meeting in the St. Mark's Room at church and will subsequently meet weekly in participants' homes during Lent. Leader: Seminarian Cuttino Alexander. First meeting: Tuesday, March 15, 7:00 p.m.
2. BOOK DISCUSSION ON REDISCOVERING VALUES: Sundays at noon
Read and discuss Holy Trinity's book for Lent, Rediscovering Values. We will meet Sundays after church beginning March 13. We will discuss meal options at the first gathering. Led by Seminarian Steven Dickens.
Sign-up for either group at the back of the church or here.
Love in a glovebox (A.K.A. Love in a Ziplock)Holy Trinity's Sunday school children on Feb. 27 assembled more than 50 bags containing necessities/gifts for people in need on the streets of Chicago. The bags were blessed at worship and many of you took one to keep in your car, backpack or briefcase to give away. HTLC children will do this again, so feel free to continue to bring items that you may find on sale or clearance while you're out shopping. And remember, you can also do this at home or with neighbors: - gloves, hat or headbands (you may find these on clearance now)
- boxes of raisins
- granola bars
- cough drops
- lip balm
- travel-size Kleenex
- combs
- Ziplock bags
- socks
- tooth brushes and toothpaste (sample size)
- hand sanitizer
- $5 gift cards to a fast food restaurant or grocery store
- CTA card

March 6, 2011 Transfiguration of Our Lord Pr. Michelle L. Miller
Transformers, transfusion, transportation, translation, transcendent, transfix, transaction, transgender, transfer, trans fat, transubstantiation..that's one I won't even begin to try and explain. Have you ever noticed how many words begin with trans? Until this week, with a Transfiguration sermon looming in front of me, I didn't pay much attention to all the Trans words. But once I did, I couldn't stop noticing them. They were everywhere: transparent, transplant, transition, transpire, transgress. In my Webster's Dictionary, 111 "trans" words fill up nearly four pages. Trans is a Latin word that means across, beyond or on the other side. Trans comes from the Greek word metemorpho, as is metamorphosis, meaning change. It's a perfect prefix to pay attention to at this time and in this place. We, as a country, are on a transformation journey. No matter what side of the political aisle we're on, we're trying to transform this country, and our place in the world.

FURTHER UPCOMING EVENTS, OPPORTUNITIES, AND NEWS

Hear Brahms' German Requiem on March 18Get your Lent on! The German Requiem by Brahms is perhaps the loveliest choral piece ever written. Brahms chose texts that are dear to the Holy Trinity community, comparing God to a mother comforting her child and human life to grass, and he focused on joy pulling us through sadness, just like HTLC's purpose statement. Don't miss the chance to hear this achingly beautiful music in Orchestra Hall with over 200 singers (including two HTLC members). Friday, March 18, 8:00 p.m. For tickets, call the Orchestra Hall box office (312) 294-3000. Discounts are available for groups and students. Books Available: Rediscovering ValuesMany in our community have already started reading the book and it is getting rave reviews! Copies of the book are available at the back of the church for $10. Read the book on your own, attend a discussion group or be part of our online discussion group. Rediscovering Values: On Wall Street, Main Street and Your Street. By Jim Wallis, bestselling author, public theologian, and international commentator on religion and public life. Wallis invites us to use our economic uncertainty to find moral clarity. Too often we have been ruled by the maxims that greed is good, it's all about me, and I want it now. Those can be challenged only with some of our oldest and best values--enough is enough, we are in it together, and thinking not just for tomorrow but for future generations. Wallis challenges us to wrestle with the questions of values together: as families, friends, churches, mosques, synagogues, and entire communities.
