Holy Trinity Lutheran Church
Greetings!

Getting from here to there.

God calls us to pick up and move. Mary and Joseph traveled to Bethlehem. God's people wandered in the wilderness. Paul roamed the Mediterranean. On Sundays, we hear that wherever we are on our faith journey we are welcome at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. And at the end of each worship service, we are told to "Go in Peace." Thanks Be to God.

We are a people of faith on the move. Our lives are always in motion, and at times we feel like we're in a boat thrown about on the rolling sea. Yet through it all, God is the anchor that holds the rocking boat. For Steve and me, God's anchor has been our worshipping community. This is where we met. This is where we have wonderful friends. This is where we have given our time and money. This is where we've felt anchored when life has been rough.

Throughout the past year, we have experienced employment transition, location transition, and life transition. And through it all, each Stransitionsunday we have heard again and again that God is with us--not so much calming the seas, but keeping us anchored so we don't drift about.

So we are convinced that as we continue on our journey away from Chicago and this place that we love, God will continue to be with us, guide us, and anchor us for whatever rough seas lie ahead.

Holy Trinity is also a congregation on the move. This is an exciting time of looking inward so that we can look outward with the Voices process. Our congregation is looking at what God is up to in the world and wondering how we can be up to that, too. In order to meet the needs of God's people, we might need to change it up a bit. It's almost like transition is part of our name as a congregation.

We are so thankful we have been part of Holy Transition Lutheran Church. Sail on. Thanks be to God.

Sunday Forum

Sallie McFague's The Body of God
Kerry Tupper - 9:30 a.m. (St. Mark's Room - upstairs)
In September we used a current bestselling novel as a starting point for a discussion of various approaches to the religion-science dialog. Join us now as we examine a theological system that embodies one of the most exciting contemporary approaches to the issue. Sallie McFague's The Body of God (published by the ELCA's Augsburg Fortress Press and mentioned in Pastor Mueller's Easter sermon in 2007) brings the author's perspective on religion and science to the global ecological crisis and suggests that the church needs to take bodies very seriously, including seeing the Earth as God's body. This will be an introductory presentation and discussion; familiarity with the book is not necessary.

Great Financial News
THANK YOU Holy Trinity members and friends! We ended the 2010 year with a $6000 surplus! We appreciate the many special year-end gifts that we received in December. Not only did we make up the $13,500 shortfall from the end of November, we are able to begin 2011 in a healthy position.

Support The Lutheran Magazine
Each January we seek special donations to cover the costs of providing The Lutheran magazine to Holy Trinity members. A gift of $10 would pay for one subscription but larger gifts are welcome as well! We are proud of our own Julie Sevig
who is a writer/editor on the staff. Write a check to Holy Trinity or donate now online.

VoicesTake the Survey!

If you have not taken the Holy Trinity online survey, click here. All the responses will be used at the leadership retreat on January 22 (see below).

Voices: Culminating Retreat
Saturday, January 22, 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
After several months of listening together, interviewing members of Holy Trinity and our neighbors and community members, we are ready to gather the responses and develop an umbrella strategy for the next phase of our ministry. Council members, staff, and other leaders who attended the retreat in October will be encouraged to attend; others are welcome as well! To sign-up please e-mail the church office.

LAST SUNDAY'S SERMON

January 9, 2011
Baptism of Our Lord
Sermon by Pr. Michelle Miller

There's a popular line from Shakespeare, "A name? What's in a name? A rose by any other name would smell as sweet." According to this view a name is just a random set of letters arbitrarily assigned to designate something.

But most of us realize the great importance of a name. Parents spend hours, days, even months discerning the name possibilities for their unborn child. Not only does the 1st name need to sound good with the last name, but often people want the name to have some sort of meaning-either a family name passed on through the generations, or a name associated with some another memorable person. Even when naming our pets or a new business great care is taken to select just the right name that will say something significant about the person, the pet or the business.

Names are intimately connected to identity. Knowing someone's name or having someone remember our name helps us form connections with one another. When you know someone's name you can call on the person, relate to her or know something about him.

COMMEMORATIONS FOR THE WEEK

Saturday, January 15 - Martin Luther King Jr., renewer of society, martyr, died 1968
An American prophet of justice among races and nations, King was an eloquent preacher, a leader of the nonviolent resistance to race-segregated society, and recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. Born on this date, he was assassinated on April 4, 1968.

Monday, January 17 -
Antony of Egypt, renewer of the church, died around 356
One of the earliest of the Egyptian desert fathers, Antony gave away his sizeable inheritance and became a hermit. Later he became leader of a group of monks who devoted themselves to prayer, worship, and labor.

Monday, January 17 - Pachomius, renewer of the church, died 346
Born in Egypt, Pachomius became a Christian while a soldier. He became a hermit (a solitary monk) and organized others into a religious community. His rule for monasteries influenced later ones in both the Eastern and Western churches.

Tuesday, January 18 - Confession of Peter
Today the church remembers the apostle Peter's great acknowledgement of Jesus as "the Christ, the Son of the living God." This festival serves as a fitting beginning to the week in which we particularly pray that all Christians might be united in faith and witness.

PRAYING THE NEWS
giffordsOn January 8, 2011, Gabrielle Giffords, a Democratic member of the U.S. Congress, was shot in the head outside a grocery store in Tucson, Arizona, while holding a public event. Six other people at the gathering, including a judge and a nine-year-old girl, were killed by the shooter.

And so we pray this news:

We pray for the healing of Gabrielle Giffords
and the family and friends of the
the six people who died
in Tucson, Arizona, that they may know
the love and support of many strangers
across the land and around the world.
