Holy Trinity Lutheran Church
Greetings!

star
Star of wonder, star of night,
star with royal beauty bright;
westward leading, still proceeding,
guide us to thy perfect light!

We got a preview of Epiphany last Sunday as the Magi appeared and we sang of the guiding star. The children waved stars-on-a-stick as we sang the above refrain.

Wouldn't it be great if we had a "guiding star" when we face tough decisions in our life? Wouldn't it be wonderful if a dream told us exactly what to do, as dreams seemed to guide Joseph and the Magi in the first several chapters of Matthew.

We have begun a new year, a traditional time to make "new year's resolutions." But as a New York Time's section put it last Sunday: It's the day ofter New Year's--broken resolutions yet? No guilt necessary. After all, it's hard enough to make it through the day, never mind a year, of good intentions. The problems is often with the resolutions themselves: "Stay financially upright. Be loving to your spouse. Eat better. Recycle." Easy to say, but hard to do.

Thankfully, we live by grace, even when we fail; yet as a community we seek divine guidance. We may watch "Dancing with the Stars" on television and follow the rich and famous "stars" of our day. Some may even read the stars in order to understand their destiny. As a community we gather in worship to reorient ourselves to a world in which God's mercy and grace shines on all people. It is a very different vision than the one we receive through entertainment, news, and politics.

Perhaps the resolution we could make together is this: to make worship a priority for the new year. May the star of Epiphany shine on us and lead us to all that is yet to be!

Our baptismal mission is to proclaim good news to all who are oppressed or in need of God's healing.

The Old Testament in Jesus
Joel Cruz - 9:30 a.m. (St. Mark's Room - upstairs)
Sometimes we have the idea that the Old Testament is not important for Christians but the author of Matthew's Gospel has other ideas. Come explore this most Jewish of the Gospels and how seeing Jesus as the culmination of Israel's stories can change the way we perceive of the Hebrew Scriptures.

Lessons for Next Sunday

Prayer of the Day
O God our Father,
at the baptism of Jesus you proclaimed him your beloved Son
and anointed him with the Holy Spirit.
Make all who are baptized into Christ
faithful to their calling to be your daughters and sons,
and empower us all with your Spirit,
through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and forever.

LAST SUNDAY'S SERMON

Second Sunday of Christmas
Homily by Pr. Craig Mueller

Establishing Residency

Is Rahm a resident? Is Rahm eligible to run for mayor of Chicago? Did you follow the residency story the past weeks? In typical Chicago fashion there was some controversy, some drama, and a bit of the ridiculous. Were there really 100 boxes of family things-including his wife's wedding dress--in the basement of the house his family had left--and were renting out? Did this prove he was intending to return? Who would have thought a lifelong Chicagoan would have had his residency challenged?

As we continue to celebrate the Twelve Days of Christmas, today's gospel is the quintessential scripture passage that speaks of the incarnation--God becoming flesh. It's John's version of Christmas. But without Mary, Joseph, shepherds, angels, Magi or even the star. To John, the heart of it is this: The Word became flesh and lived among us.

Lived among us. The Greek suggests that the Word--Jesus--dwelt or more literally "tented" with us. It's like God tenting or tabernacling among the ancient Israelites. Maybe we would say: God took up residency. One paraphrase puts it this way: The Word became flesh and moved into the neighborhood.

No talk of Jesus living in your heart. The divine presence dwells among us. Every part of human life is infused with the holy. Christmas means that the earth, the material, the bodily, the ordinary, is the realm of the spiritual.

nativityyAnd speaking of neighborhoods, Chicago has a plethora of fascinating neighborhoods, each with its own character and color, its own problems and possibilities. Often artistic renderings of the nativity, including crèches, depict Jesus, Mary and Joseph as native people of a certain country or place. How would the holy family be portrayed in the Chicago neighborhood of Englewood, Pilsen, Rogers Park, Lakeview? How would the diversity of families today give witness to God's grace establishing residence in wonderful and surprising ways? How is grace present in a family struggling to get by? In a homeless mother and child? In a family pushing a stroller on Southport?

The Word takes flesh. Establishes residency. Dwells among you. In your neighborhood. Where you live and work and play. Where you struggle and doubt. As we begin this new year of grace, may our eyes be opened to the Holy One residing, tenting, dwelling, living among us.
