Holy Trinity Lutheran Church
Greetings!
hingeThese are hinge days. Last Sunday marked the end of a church year. We festively celebrated Christ the King Sunday. With Pr. Denver Bitner, president of Lutheran Social Services of Illinois, we were reminded that we honor a different kind of king whose reign is revealed in works of justice and love. With choir and trumpet our voices resounded: This is the feast of victory for our God.

Our scripture readings in November had to do with the end of the world and the Day of the Lord. And it seems like we begin where we ended, for next Sunday we hear more readings about the coming of the Son of Man at the end of time.

Maybe our lives are in a hinge in-between place more times than not, if we really think about it. There's always something ending or dying, and something beginning or coming to life.

In these hinge days we are caught between seasons. Though not yet Thanksgiving, and days away from Advent, the stores and streets are decked for Christmas. Yet we will gather Thursday with loved ones to share a festive meal, and to pause to remember the blessings in our lives. May you rejoice in God's bountiful grace on Thanksgiving Day.

Then get ready! Hinge, indeed! Advent is coming. Christ is coming. And things are going to get stirred up. The scriptures will surprise, shock, and challenge us. The blue of Advent is meant to seem a bit out of place in all the holiday overdrive of our culture. So come next Sunday as we begin a new year of grace together. Come and sing the great hymns of Advent. Come and gather together as we look for the signs of the end--but in God's mercy, the beginning!

Pastor Craig M. Mueller

UPCOMING SUNDAY - Advent I

AdventThe new church year begins with a wake-up call: Christ is coming soon! In today's readings both Paul and Jesus challenge us to wake from sleep, for we know neither the day nor hour of the Lord's coming. Isaiah proclaims the day when God will gather all people on the holy mountain and there will be no more war or suffering. Though we vigilantly watch for the promised day of salvation, we wait for what we already have: Christ comes among us this day as the word and meal that strengthens our faith in the promises of God.

Schedule this Sunday:
  • 8:30 a.m. - Simple Eucharist
  • 9:15 a.m. - Choir Rehearsal
  • 9:30 a.m. - Holiday Fair Trade Bazaar

FURTHER UPCOMING EVENTS, OPPORTUNITIES, AND NEWS
PAWS Chicago Opportunity

Each December, PAWS has an adopt-a-thon, and in anticipation of the large numbers of cats and dogs adopted, PAWS taps its foster network for people to care for dogs and cats before the adopt-a-thon. Fostering would be for a finite period of time (probably 2-4 weeks), and there is no obligation to do more, although people are obviously welcome to continue fostering if they wish. You can request dogs or cats of specific sizes, can already have pets or not have pets, and/or request pets that are child friendly, even for different age groups (eg, a dog great with kids 10+ but not preschoolers, cats who love to be around babies, etc.). If the pet has any medical conditions PAWS covers the cost of treatment.

If people are interested, they would need to attend a foster orientation and fill out an online application. However, PAWS said if we get 12 or more adults from Holy Trinity who are interested, then they will set up a special session for us. If we have fewer than 12, then Beth Morris can work with congregants to get them into the foster network. With questions, contact Beth.

COMMEMORATIONS FOR THE WEEK
Wednesday, November 24 - Justus Falckner, died 1723; Jehu Jones, died 1852; William Passavant, died 1894; pastors in North America
Not only was Falckner the first Lutheran ordained in North America, but he published a catechism which was the first Lutheran book published on the continent. Jones was the Lutheran church's first African American pastor and carried out missionary work in Philadelphia which led to the formation there of the first African American Lutheran congregation (St. Paul's). William Passavant helped to establish hospitals and orphanages in a number of cities and was the first to introduce deaconesses to the work of hospitals in the United States.

Thursday, November 25 - Isaac Watts, hymnwriter, died 1748
Thought by many to be the greatest hymnwriter in the English language, Watts as a youth was critical of the quality of the metrical psalter of the time. He wrote about 600 hymns-many based on the psalms, but others that are not.

Tuesday, November 30, 2010 - Andrew, Apostle
The first of the disciples to be called by Jesus, Andrew quickly began to bring others to the Savior, including Simon Peter. The Bible also shows him leading some Greeks to meet Jesus, and he brought forward the boy with five loaves and two fish, with which Jesus fed thousands.

ConvictionConviction is a true story of a sister's love for her brother that is so radical and astonishing that it takes one's breath away. There is a spiritual quality to this rare kind of kinship; it includes self-sacrifice, loyalty, and total commitment. The movie tells the story of an innocent man convicted of murder and his sister's determination to free him from prison.
