| Greetings! | |

Death. Life. Two juxtaposing, seemingly polar opposite concepts. Yet this past Sunday, we celebrated both in an intimate contrast. On one hand we welcomed two beautiful children of God into the body of Christ, indeed a new life through baptism. On the other hand we remembered and celebrated those who have gone before us: loved ones, saints and martyrs. These opposites were held in tension in the midst of a festival celebration replete with incense, music, ritual and eucharist.
This celebration also marks a changing of the season. With Summer a fleeting memory and Fall quickly slipping away, we approach the darkness of Winter. We are surrounded by death: leaves fall, grass withers, plants shrivel. We are shrouded in darkness. We feel the sting of cold winter winds.
Yet each Sunday we are reminded of the baptismal promise of life everlasting. For every dead plant, there comes new growth. Out of the darkness we will soon again feel the warmth of the sun. The biting winds become cool breezes on a hot summer day. The cycle of the seasons reflects the juxtaposition of life and death every single year just as each Sunday we hold in tension the life and death of Christ.
Do not mourn the loss of summer and the positive connotations that it brings. Instead, embrace the coming darkness, cold, and death as a reminder of the covenant that all things are made new in the waters of baptism. We saw this clearly last Sunday, so let it permeate your life and remember this each day.

UPCOMING SUNDAY - Commitment Sunday
|
The end is near. There is no doubt about it. The warnings are dire. The tone of today's texts is ominous. But the baptized know how to live in the "meantimes." The baptized are strengthened for the living of these days in word and sacrament. The baptized rally around the invitation of the apostle: "Brothers and sisters, do not be weary in doing what is right." Schedule this Sunday:- 8:30 a.m. - Simple Eucharist
- 9:15 a.m. - Choir Rehearsal
- 9:30 a.m. - Adult Forum and Sunday School
- 10:30 a.m. - Sung Eucharist (and first communion)
- Music: Cantor - Heather DeSouza; Children's Choir
- 11:45 a.m. - Seminarian Committee Meeting
Sunday ForumChristians and Muslims Part 2 Carol LaHurd 9:30 a.m. (St. Mark's Room - upstairs) Are modern-day Muslim-Christian relations truly a "clash of civilizations" between Islam and the West? We will assess this claim as we review19th century Christian missionary encounters in such contexts as Egypt and Palestine and current conditions for the substantial Muslim minorities living in the United States and Europe. Lessons for Next Sunday
Prayer of the Day O God, the protector of all who trust in you, without you nothing is strong, nothing is holy. Embrace us with your mercy, that with you as our ruler and guide, we may live through what is temporary without losing what is eternal, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

Wherever you are on your spiritual journey, you are welcome at Holy Trinity! Here is a special invitation to learn more about Holy Trinity, what makes Lutheranism unique, meet some other folks, and find out more about our mission and ministry. Orientation sessions are held four times a year. The next session is Sunday, November 21. We will meet from 9:00 - 10:20 a.m., followed by the 10:30 a.m. worship service. PAWS Chicago OpportunityEach December, PAWS has an adopt-a-thon, and in anticipation of the large numbers of cats and dogs adopted, PAWS taps its foster network for people to care for dogs and cats before the adopt-a-thon. Fostering would be for a finite period of time (probably 2-4 weeks), and there is no obligation to do more, although people are obviously welcome to continue fostering if they wish. You can request dogs or cats of specific sizes, can already have pets or not have pets, and/or request pets that are child friendly, even for different age groups (eg, a dog great with kids 10+ but not preschoolers, cats who love to be around babies, etc.). If the pet has any medical conditions PAWS covers the cost of treatment.
If people are interested, they would need to attend a foster orientation and fill out an online application. However, PAWS said if we get 12 or more adults from Holy Trinity who are interested, then they will set up a special session for us. If we have fewer than 12, then Beth Morris can work with congregants to get them into the foster network. With questions, contact Beth. Save The Date: Advent Lessons and Carols Sunday, December 12 @ 4:00 p.m. Since many Holy Trinity members are away for Christmas, this is a special Advent gathering of our community. The Holy Trinity Choir and Holy Trinity Strings will provide the music. Our newly formed string ensemble is made up predominantly of our own members--what an amazing gift for our congregation!
December gets busy--it's not too early to invite friends or neighbors to join you for this special service of music, readings, and prayer.

| LAST SUNDAY'S SERMON |

November 7, 2010 All Saints Sunday Pr. Michelle L. Miller
Hate has no place in God's House! That's the title of a recent article by Bishop Desmond Tutu, a respected worldwide leader from South Africa. In this brief article he writes, "I have always striven for a life of love in action. Many told me to stop. They called me a communist or they told me that I might be killed. Now, I have lived long, and one choice that comes with age is how to deal with our own mortality. Should we be more careful or be more bold?" Bishop Tutu has always been a man who lives boldly in his faith; he is the kind of man who exemplifies sainthood. His whole life has been spent doing good for others, bringing peace and forgiveness to a troubled world and oppressed people. Even in retirement, he speaks and acts boldly on behalf of the voiceless and oppressed and we stand in awe and reverence.
...
Today is all Saints Sunday, the day we remember the holy people of God. In our everyday, secular conversations about saints, we call people saints because of the good things they do--the way they treat other people; because of the sort of life they lead. But if a saint is a holy person of God, being a saint comes only as a gift from the one who makes us holy... God. Read the entire sermon here. Listen to the sermon here.

COMMEMORATIONS FOR THE WEEK Thursday, November 11 - Martin, Bishop of Tours, died 397 Martin's pagan father enlisted him in the Roman army. Approached by a beggar, Martin cut his cloak in half and gave part to the man, whom he later understood as representing Christ. He asked to leave the army, but was jailed instead. After his release, he became a preacher, and later a bishop.
Thursday, November 11 - Søren Aabye Kierkegaard, teacher, died 1855 Kierkegaard was a Danish theologian whose writings also gave rise to the modern philosophy of existentialism. He frequently attacked the complacency of the state church of his day, as well as its desire to be accepted by polite society rather than be a stumbling block.
