Curtain up, light the lights!
Everything is coming up roses and holidays at the Dane County Regional Airport. The halls of the terminal have been decked out, and the sounds of carols fill the air, as musical groups from schools around Dane County serenade travelers and the public alike. See the column on the right for the concert schedule.
But there are more reasons to celebrate here at the airport! We're expecting a number of charter flights to Pasadena at the end of December as the UW-Badger Football team makes another journey to the Rose Bowl. Congratulations Coach Bielema and players!
Since the holidays are traditionally some of the busiest days at the airport, we recommend that those who are flying out of DCRA arrive well before their flight to give themselves some extra time to park, go through security, and relax before take off. Also, if you're headed to the "Grandaddy of them all" in Pasadena, check with your travel agent about available shuttles to and from the airport, and plan to arrive two hours prior to the departure of your flight. Check msnairport.com often for updates on Rose Bowl flight preparations. At last count there were 25 charter flights with approximately 5,000 passengers already booked for the Rose Bowl. |

Gearing up for the Rose Bowl
The typical holiday travel commotion around the Dane County Regional Airport will be cranked up a notch when the U-W Badger Football team, the Badger band, and charter flights of anxious fans wing their way to Pasadena for the Rose Bowl on January 1. Well, you don't have to look far to gear up for "the Grandaddy of them all" with all things Badger at the Wisconsin Marketplace and the Lake Country Market at the airport. That includes the very popular "Teach Me How To Bucky" t-shirts and hoodies, which store manager Alanna Roth says have been flying off the shelves. "Teach Me How To Bucky" is a song and dance phenomenon that has swept the UW-Madison and, thanks to YouTube, the world this football season. It's probably a safe bet you'll catch a glimpse of it more than once in Pasadena, so you better have the gear.
And the winner is...
Bucky isn't the only winner around these parts! Our congratulations go out to Alanna Roth, manager of the Paradies Shops at the Dane County Regional Airport. Alanna has just been selected "Manager of the Year" by the company. Roth manages the Lake Country Market, Wisconsin Marketplace, and CNBC Shop at the airport. Airport Director Bradley Livingston said, "Alanna strives to give travelers a taste of Madison and Wisconsin that they can take with them wherever the go. Her dedication to the stores she manages shows everyday in how well stocked and organized the three venues are." Roth has been managing the airport's shops for just over two years.
Our WURST is the best...
At the recent Country Music Association Awards in Nashville, Tennessee, up-and-coming country music entertainer James Wesley told John and Tammy of Madison's Star 96.3 that the best Reuben sandwich he ever had can be found right here at Usinger's Wurst German Bar at the Dane County Regional Airport. Ok, so he thought it was an Irish pub, but the point is he knows where the best airport food is. Take a listen: James Wesley praises the Wurst Reuben.
Meanwhile, in honor of the Badgers return to the Rose Bowl, Usinger's Wurst German Bar and the Great Dane Brew Pub, both located at the airport, will be having brat and cheese curd specials December 29-January 1. |

About those full body scanners...
Recently you may have read or watched local news stories concerning the Dane County Regional Airport and the installation of full body scanners at the Transportation Security Administration checkpoint here. There seems to be some confusion over whether those scanners are coming to DCRA, who pays for them, and when they would be installed. So, let's clear the air. The decision on where and when to install the full body scanners rests solely with the Department of Homeland Security. Only when the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security signs off on the list of airports that will receive the scanners will there be a formal announcement, and then it will become official. The equipment is owned and operated by the federal government. For more information concerning airport security measures visit tsa.gov. |

The holidays unwrapped: How to present your presents for security screening
Nothing like going through the work of carefully wrapping every holiday gift you're bringing with you on your flight, only to have them torn into by security. The Transportation Security Administration recommends that you leave the wrapping for your destination, or send the gifts ahead. According to tsa.gov : "Our security officers may have to unwrap a gift if they need to take a closer look inside. This applies to both carry-ons at the security checkpoint and to checked baggage. Please ship wrapped gifts ahead of time or wait until you arrive at your destination to wrap them." Also, be sure to check out the TSA's web site if you plan on taking food on your travels (or view November's issue of Aircurrents). |
Bring it on, Mother Nature!

Weather delays whenever they come are no fun, but rest assured that the maintenence crew at the Dane County Regional Airport is poised, ready, and equipped to keep the runways, taxiways, and aircraft parking aprons free from snow and ice this winter. Airport Facilities and Maintenence Director Bill Legore says the airport's snow removal trucks are heavier and have a higher horsepower than average snow removal trucks, and are usually equipped with four wheel drive. "Trucks of this size are required because of the size of the runway pavement," Legore says. In fact, the runway pavements at the Dane County Regional Airport are as large as 150 feet wide by 9000 feet long! Trucks fitted with 22 foot wide plows, each pulling 20 foot wide rotary brooms, work in teams to keep the surfaces clear. Also, unlike your typical street or highway, salt cannot be used on a runway to remove ice. Legore says given the highly corrosive nature of salt, it cannot be used near aircraft! "The combination plow/broom trucks do a good job of removing snow down to the dry pavement," Legore adds. And they do their work impressively fast. Legore says crews can typically clear a runway and have it useable for aircraft in about 15 minutes!
All that being said, it's always a good idea to check with your airline before coming to the airport on days when the weather is threatening. The daily flight schedules, including delays and cancellations, are readily available at msnairport.com .
