Flights from Madison to Atlanta resume in November
The Dane County Regional Airport is pleased to announce that Delta Airlines is resuming its non-stop service from Madison to Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport on November 3, 2010. According to Airport Director Bradley Livingston, "Business and leisure travelers alike have told us they have missed having this connection to Atlanta. This daily, non-stop flight will provide our customers another link to the southern United States, and connections throughout the world." Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk said she is also delighted that flights to Atlanta are resuming. "This good news just emphasizes that Dane County remains 'open for business', and provides an even greater opportunity to exchange ideas, goods and services with the southern United States and beyond." Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Airport is the world's busiest airport and handles 88 million passengers annually with non-stop service to 156 U.S. destinations and more than 80 international destinations in 50 countries. Passengers can start booking flights from Madison to Atlanta now. |
Departing sea of red
September 4 was the official kick off of another UW Badger Football season as Bucky battled the Rebels of the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. The two days prior also marked the kick off of another season of charter flights to away games from the Dane County Regional Airport, with five charters booked for the Badger/UNLV Game. Matt Lepay, the voice of Badger sports on the Badger Radio Network tells us, "Badger fans are known for following their team to stadiums across the country. Trust me, the players notice. Through the years, they have talked about how much they appreciate seeing "Badger Red" in an otherwise hostile stadium. It is yet another reason why Badger fans are so special." There must be something to that. The Badgers went on to beat UNLV 41-21! |

Ironman returns
What's billed as "one of the most grueling events in the world of sports", participants in Ironman Wisconsin will arrive at the Dane County Regional Airport this week for the 9th annual event that includes a swim in Lake Monona, a bike ride through Dane County, and a marathon in and around downtown Madison (phew!) on Sunday, September 12. Ironman Wisconsin typically draws more than 2,000 athletes, and thousands more spectators, in and around Madison. The Dane County Regional Airport is proud to welcome these athletes and wish them the best of luck! |
Cell phones and other personal electronic devices in use in the Dane Co. Regional Airport Terminal. | What's the hang up?
It wasn't that long ago that cellphones went from being an expensive luxury to an all out necessity, and almost as quickly as they gained in popularity came the debate over when and where they should be used--including on airplanes. The Federal Aviation Administration, as well as the Federal Communications Commission, ban the use of cellphones and some other personal electronic devices on aircraft, yet the debate rages anew now that many foreign airlines are permitting their use. Opponents say that radio signals from the devices could disrupt aircraft functions, not to mention the potential for annoying passengers who long for peace and quiet. Yet, advocates argue that the use wouldn't compromise safety, and that being able to use a cellphone or other personal electronic device on an aircraft is practical and convenient. According to the FAA, there are "still unknowns" about the radio signals given off by phones or PEDs. But, according to an article in USA Today , "even if the safety concerns were laid to rest, surveys have found most airline passengers do not want to sit in close proximity to fellow travelers chatting it up..." Meanwhile, a group of lawmakers has included a provision in the House-passed FAA reauthorization bill that would prohibit cell phone use on planes by anyone other than flight crews or law enforcement. The provision is not included in the Senate version. You make the call: Is cellphone use on aircraft unsafe and annoying, or is it to be expected in this day and age? |

We rock...
Reconstruction of Taxiway Alpha at the Dane County Regional Airport continues at a fevered pitch to get the $6.4 million project completed this fall. The picture on the right shows the crushing of old pavement from the taxiway which will in turn be used for the subgrade for the shoulders along the new taxiway. It's our way of recycling old materials for the new project, and saves us from hauling the material from another site to the airport.
...and we roll
Meanwhile, crews began pouring the concrete for the new Taxiway Alpha-South on September 16th. Nice weather has allowed the process to run quickly and smoothly. The project is expected to be completed by November.

An ounce of prevention
The Dane County Regional Airport is teaming up with Home Health United for a flu shot clinic on Monday, October 4 from 9:00 AM until Noon. The clinic is open to the public and will be held in the Art Court on the first floor of the terminal. Local health experts say an airport is an ideal spot for a flu shot clinic. Dr. Nasia Safdar, head of the infectious disease division at UW Hospital and Clinics, says the flu vaccination prior to travel is critical. "You may be exposed to the flu from a sick passenger en route, putting you at a very high risk of getting infected." The vaccine is $30, while the flu mist cost $32. Home Health United accepts cash, checks, Visa, MasterCard, Medicare Part B and Medicaid. |
Telegram from JFK dated Nov. 20, 1963 on exhibit at the Airport's Art Court | Art/History
While people have been awe-struck by the beautiful exhibit currently on display at the Art Court of the Dane County Regional Airport, there's something just as awe-inspiring that shouldn't be overlooked. It's a copy of a telegram from President John F. Kennedy congratulating Dr. Harry Waisman on the dedication of the Joseph P. Kennedy, Junior Labs at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Medical School. What is especially poignant is the date on the telegram--just two days before the President's assassination. The Harvey A. Stevens International Collection of Art by People with Developmental Disabilities is on loan from the Waisman Center. The exhibit, which is free and open to the public, will be on display until January 9, 2011. |
