Airline holiday surcharges go into 2010
Airlines are adding an average $20 surcharge for travel during the Christmas through New Year's holidays. And, the airlines are now extending surcharges of $10 up to $30 through spring of 2010 to cover the Easter / Spring Break time period. There's one day with a $50 surcharge--Feb. 8, for travelers returning from the Super Bowl. |
Northwest ticket holders check in at Delta
If you hold a Northwest Airlines ticket, and are checking in at the airport, please check in at the Delta ticket agent desk. Delta purchased Northwest Airlines in 2009 and is in the process of completing the full migration from Northwest flights and branding to Delta. The Northwest logo shown on the tail of this aircraft is being phased out in favor of the Delta logo. |
Major snowstorm affects airports from Minneapolis to Chicago
Dane County Regional Airport snow removal crews were on the job around the clock as the first major winter storm hit, dumping 14 inches of snow on Dec. 7-8. The airport stayed open during the storm, but there were a number of cancellations. Airports in Minneapolis, Chicago and Milwaukee were also particularly affected by the storm. For the most part, flights were back to normal by Thursday, Dec. 9. |
| Follow these guidelines for holiday travel
The holidays have arrived at Dane County Regional Airport with three beautifully decorated trees adding to the festive atmosphere. Here are some tips if you're traveling during the busy holidays:
- Pack lightly. Planes will be full. The airlines limit the number and size of carry-on items and charge a fee for checked bags.
- Don't wrap packages, especially if you carry them on the plane. TSA Security staff may ask you to unwrap them.
- Remember the "311 Rule" for taking liquids and gels onboard the aircraft. Liquids and gels can only be carried on if they are in 3.4 oz. size containers or smaller, packed in a clear 1-quart size sealed plastic bag (zip-lock type), and only one bag per person.
- Carry your medications on-board with you in case of delayed or cancelled flights, or lost baggage.
- Be flexible. Because planes are flying fuller, when flight disruptions occur it may take longer to re-schedule your flight. Calling your travel agent or your airline's 800 number can often speed flight changes, especially if lines are long.

Protect yourself against the flu
This year, protecting yourself against the flu is another important travel tip. Frequent hand-washing is important. Carry on a travel-size (3.4 oz or less) alcohol-based hand sanitizer or individual packets of sanitizing wipes. Use the wipes after touching the plastic bins when going through the security checkpoint, and to wipe down the tray table, arm and head rests, and lavatory door handles when you're on the plane.

Christmas shopping is easy--right at the airport
Need to do some Christmas shopping? Use the time before (or after) your flight to stop in at the Wisconsin Marketplace where you'll find gifts for all ages. Here's some ideas:
Wisconsin cheese. Who doesn't love Wisconsin cheese? And, besides the perennial favorites of cheese curd and aged cheddar, colorful holiday cheeses come in shapes of Christmas trees, candy canes, gift boxes and, of course, spotted cows.
Books. Wisconsin cookbooks, the latest best-sellers and even Weird Wisconsin Travel Guide to Wisconsin Local Legends and Best Kept Secrets, by L. Godfrey and R. Hendricks, will surprise family and friend, alike.
Badger gear. Badger merchandise is fully stocked for kids to adults. You'll find Packers items, too, including a full line of cheesehead goods!
For the kids. Chuckle Buddies of the dog, Santa and monkey varieties laugh and roll around; and the ever-popular Webkins are on sale for only $9.99.
