Eisenhower's Boyhood Garden Comes to Life through 4-H Members
|
| ABILENE, KS - Local 4-H members are very involved in this year's Living History Garden, located next to the Eisenhower Boyhood Home. The youth portray what it would have been like in the early 1900s when Ike was about 10 years old.
Dressed in period clothing, the youth will characterize activities of the Eisenhower family and friends. Earlier this year, the 15 kids enrolled in the project participated in "hands-on" activities where they learned all kinds of facts about what life was like in Abilene in the early 1900s. Throughout the summer they will put this information to use as they interact with visitors on most Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

The 4-H kids also help tend the garden which is planted with Heirloom varieties of the crops that were grown by the Eisenhower family, such as tomatoes, potatoes, peas, beans, onions and corn.
New this year, some of the youth are participating "behind the scenes." Some are baking cookies from Ida (Ike's mother) Eisenhower's recipes to share with visitors, while others are sewing aprons and costumes.
Later in the summer the 4-H members are looking forward to serving as Parade Marshalls for the Central Kansas Free Fair parade on August 2. The theme for the parade is "We Still Like Ike." |
