ABILENE, Kan. - Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt will be at the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum on Tuesday, April 17, for a Kansas Town Hall meeting. The public is invited to attend the program scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Visitors Center Auditorium.
Schmidt will speak about current issues of the Attorney General's office. For three days at the end of March, Schmidt was in the gallery of the U.S. Supreme Court to hear the arguments for and against the Affordable Care Act. Kansas and 25 other states are challenging the constitutionality of the health reform law on two fronts: Its requirement that virtually everyone purchase health insurance and the law's expansion of Medicaid, the health care program for the poor and disabled.
Schmidt took office as the 44th Attorney General of Kansas on Jan. 10, 2011. As Attorney General, his priorities are providing quality legal services for the State of Kansas and standing up for public safety, economic growth and personal liberty.
Before being elected Attorney General, Schmidt served 10 years as a Kansas State Senator representing the 15th district in Southeast Kansas. During his last six years in the Senate, he served as majority leader for the Republican Caucus. He also worked in private practice with an Independence law firm.
This program is part of the Kansas Town Hall program at the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum. The goal of Kansas Town Hall is to increase citizen participation and understanding of the democratic experience. These programs allow Kansans to engage in important policy issues.
"Citizenship is not a mere matter of expressing our pride in our traditions...Citizenship is the carrying forward of the ideals on which nations based on freedom are maintained and sustained." - President Dwight D. Eisenhower, Sept. 30, 1956
