ABILENE, Kan. - A program featuring photographs taken by General George S. Patton, Jr. during World War II will be held Friday afternoon, Nov. 11 at the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum. The event is scheduled for 2 p.m. in the Visitors Center Auditorium.
General Patton is known as a warrior, leader, fighter--but a photographer? Throughout World War II Patton carried a camera with him on the battlefields of North Africa, Sicily and Europe. He snapped away at anything that caught his eye: destroyed tanks, men on the move, captured enemy, ancient ruins and just plain Army life. He sent the pictures home to his wife, Beatrice, who dutifully filled 11 photo albums. | | Author/Historian Kevin Hymel |
The albums were donated by Patton's family to the Library of Congress in the early 1990s. When Kevin Hymel discovered them in 1996, he published a selection of the pictures in his book "Patton's Photographs: War as He Saw It." Hymel's presentation will include projected images of Patton's war photographs and also photographs of Patton from his childhood to his death in Dec.1945. Copies of Hymel's book will be available for purchase and an autograph session will follow the program. Refreshments will be provided by our partners the Arts Council of Dickinson County Literary Committee.
Hymel, historian for the U.S. Army's Combat Studies Institute in Leavenworth, Kan., writes contemporary military history narratives. He holds a Master's degree in American History from Villanova University.
Hymel leads the "In the Footsteps of Patton" tour across Europe as a historian/tour guide for Stephen Ambrose Historical Tours. He has appeared on the History Channel, Fox News Channel and Book-TV speaking about Patton and military history. Hymel is also the co-author of "Patton: Legendary World War II Commander." He is currently working on a new book focusing exclusively on Gen. Patton's experiences during World War II. |
