ABILENE, Kan. - The combined choirs of the new Eisenhower High School of Goddard, Kan., will sing for President Eisenhower's birthday in a celebration scheduled at the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum in Abilene, Kan. The celebration will include birthday cake at the Visitors Center Auditorium on Oct. 14 at 10:30 a.m. The program is free and open to the public.
The performance will include a specially-commissioned piece titled "We Are Summoned" under the baton of EHS choir director, Laura Taylor Glunt. Written by Kansas composer, Dr. Guy Vollen, "We Are Summoned" is a dramatic setting of a particularly timely and inspirational passage from President Eisenhower's first inaugural address. Dr. Vollen has graciously agreed to join EHS pianist, Mary Lembke on stage with his French horn to accompany the EHS combined choirs for the inaugural performance.
Dr. Guy Vollen holds Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Music from Wichita State University and his Doctorate in Composition from Florida State University. He has composed for a number of local performers and ensembles such as the Friends University Community Orchestra, the Senseney Music Community Band, and the Mid-Kansas Saxophone Quartet. Dr. Vollen continues to perform as a horn player with the Pegasus Brass Trio, Senseney Music Community Band, Wichita Community Concert Band, Wichita Wind Ensemble Professional Band, and the Delano Chamber Brass. As a conductor, Dr. Vollen co-founded the Delano Chamber Players in 2008 and served as the Musical Director of that organization until 2011.
This special program is one of several activities scheduled to mark the 121st birthday of President Eisenhower. The complete list of activities is available on the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum web site at www.eisenhower.archives.gov.
