Chair's Corner...
By Charlie Loftus
FOTA Executive Committee
Ah, the retired life! Here's a typical morning conversation at our house. My wife says, "Sweetie, what are you doing today?" My answer, "I'm going to The Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens to work on that GeoArboretum stuff." She says, "Have fun, dearest, see you this afternoon."
Okay, what's wrong with this story? If you guessed that my wife never calls me "sweetie" and "dearest," you've got that right. However, I really had something else in mind-something that I said in the above exchange. Truth is, in conversation I would never refer to our beloved venue as "The Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens"! It's just too cumbersome. Actually, I rarely even say "the Arboretum." I say "the Arb." And I'm not alone!
"The Arb." Short, efficient and kind of catchy, don't you think? I've noticed lots of my fellow volunteers use it in emails, in meetings and at various events. It's friendly, saves typing time and, most importantly, avoids the tongue-twisting, four-syllable word Ar-bor-E-tum! C'mon, try this (assuming no one else is around). Say, "Arboretum" four times in a row. Real fast!
Which brings us back to the point of this month's Chair's Corner. We thought, why not call our eNewsletter "the Arb"? So we will, beginning with this issue. We hope you like the new look and enjoy reading--and visiting--"the Arb"!

Arts for Kids October 1-2
Moms, dads, grandparents and kids age 2 to 12 will have a great opportunity to enjoy a variety of arts and nature oriented activities in a beautiful setting -- the Children's Garden -- the first weekend in October. Tickets are $6 per person. Children under 2 are free.
Nature crafts highlight the event, with a special project led by the Nelson-Atkins Museum on Sunday. The Overland Park Orchestra will perform "Beethoven's Wig" both days. There will be hayrides through the prairie and wooded areas, face painting, treasure hunts, puppet theater, music, dance, and Forest the Fox. Back with his hands-on display of child-friendly snakes is Dan Johnson. The Kansas City Zoo will also be bringing animal visitors to the Arboretum to entertain and educate.
This year, with the support of the PNC Foundation, Arts for Kids is excited to present a brand new tent geared especially toward preschoolers. This new tent will provide a special opportunity for young attendees to experience the arts and nature through activities and crafts designed just for them.
Arts for Kids is held rain or shine. Concessions will be available. Come and see the new caboose that has now been installed in the first phase of the new Train Garden!

Whistle Stop Train Garden Update...Thanks to a generous gift from the Bob and Wilma VanLandingham Family, the new caboose will be dedicated on Sunday, September 25, 2:30 pm. Refreshments will be hosted by the Friends of the Arboretum. Everyone is welcome. The caboose is the centerpiece of the first phase of this ambitious Train Garden project.
A retaining wall built with railroad ties on the south end of the garden is near completion. This wall maintains the railroad theme and provides an interesting visual element to the south end of the garden.
Lowe's is currently building the child-size ticket booth that will anchor the south end of the garden. Upon completion of the garden a second booth will anchor the north end.
The Foundation has received a generous matching gift of $50,000 for the Train Garden from an anonymous donor. To be eligible for the match, donors need to send gifts to The Arts & Recreation Foundation of Overland Park, PO Box 26392, Overland Park, KS 66225 and put a note on the check stating Train Garden Match. Donors may also donate online at www.artsandrec-op.org. Click Donate Now, then click Make a Contribution, then click Contribute and select amount. Designate for the Train Garden and click Next. Complete your billing information and in the note section, put Train Garden Match.
The Foundation has also received a gift to name the Margaret Godfrey Memorial Oakleaf Hydrangea Garden in Phase I of the Train Garden.
Things are chugging right along in the new Train Garden! |
