Chair's Corner...

By John Kalal, Treasurer

FOTA Executive Committee

With the temperatures soaring above 100 degrees the last few weeks it is hard to believe that the 2011 Holiday Luminary Walk is just three months away. The Luminary team is busy preparing the festivities for the Arboretum's big winter event. I use the term "big" because the Arboretum hosted more than 10,000 visitors at the 2010 Luminary Walk! The Luminary Committee reports that the path will be expanded to include Margie's Garden and the Train Garden areas, providing even more beautifully illuminated walkways.

Luminary Walk 2009

This year's event will take place on November 25 and 26 as well as December 2 and 3. The Luminary Walk is timed perfectly with the Thanksgiving Holiday to attract families that are ready to venture out into the chill to experience a one-of-a-kind candle-lit extravaganza. The Luminary Walk is a tradition in our home, as I know it is in many of yours. Guests come from all across Kansas and Missouri to stroll through the snow-lined garden paths that are hand-lit with more than 12,000 candles during the four nights of the event.

Enjoy the rest of the summer, but remember that the Arboretum boasts a unique beauty in the winter. Get ready to light those candles!

Save the Date!

Arts for Kids is October 1 - 2

Arts for Kids Oct 1 - 2Moms, dads, grandparents and kids age 2 to 12 will have a great opportunity to enjoy a variety of arts and nature oriented activities in a beautiful setting -- the Children's Garden -- the first weekend in October. Tickets are $6 per person. Children under 2 are free.

Nature crafts highlight the event, with a special project led by the Nelson-Atkins Museum on Sunday. The Overland Park Orchestra will perform "Beethoven's Wig" both days. There will be hayrides through the prairie and wooded areas, face painting, treasure hunts, puppet theater, music, dance, and Forest the Fox. New Caboose Being InstalledThis year, with the support of the PNC Foundation, Arts for Kids is excited to present a brand new tent geared especially toward preschoolers. This new tent will provide a special opportunity for young attendees to experience the arts and nature through activities and crafts designed just for them.

Come and see the new caboose that has now been installed in the first phase of the new Train Garden!

Arts for Kids is held rain or shine. Concessions will be available.

A Special Medicine Wheel Visitor

Chelsea Yellow Eyes

Chelsea Yellow Eyes visited the Arboretum's Medicine Wheel in early August. She is the granddaughter of Chief Yellow Eyes, who designed this special place of worship and spiritual reflection for his father. The Medicine Wheel honors a culture whose existence in this region goes back several millennia. It is the only one of its kind in Kansas.

Chelsea was awarded the "Miss NASA Princess Award" (Native American Student Advocate) and received a $40,000 scholarship to Bacone College. As Princess, she tours various powwows and performs traditional dances. She is pictured here with two little visitors who were no doubt thrilled to meet a real Native American princess!   Photo by Carol Fowler
