Chair's Corner...

By Teri Shields

FOTA Executive Committee Chair

Teri ShieldsIt is that time again where I get to sing the praises of our volunteers. The list of activities that volunteers do at the Arboretum is truly amazing. They garden, greet visitors, unload trucks at the plant sale, light thousands of candles during the luminary, paint faces at Arts for Kids, register golfers at O.P. City Council Presidents golf tournament, help children with crafts at Jazz in the Woods, make new friends and have great fun. The list goes on and on. All I can say on behalf of Friends of the Arboretum is a great big Thank You.

The spring plant sale just a few weeks ago was wonderful. Our growers Tim Sullivan and Ken O'Dell bring us the most beautiful and exciting plants each year. Bayer Crop Science gave us great sponsorship support again. The preview sale on Thursday night was a bit stormy, but that didn't stop the dedicated FOTA gardeners.

Stormy Opening Night

There will be three new Executive Committee members at the June 13 meeting. Join me in welcoming Carol Saxon, Bob Lane and Terry Wood. They bring a tremendous amount of knowledge and experience.

Things are really moving at the Arboretum this spring. The Celebration Terrace is nearing completion, with 18 pavers pre-sold. Serenity Pointe will be completed on schedule and dedicated on July 5, and the Train Garden caboose is on its way. It's going to be a great year. Come out and see how beautiful your Arboretum is in the spring.

Bird Update
by Sue Davidson

Along the 28 box Bluebird Trail at the Arboretum you see the beautiful blue and orange birds flitting around. Inside the nest boxes we have counted a total of 24 Bluebird babies, 5 Chickadee babies, 10 Bluebird eggs and 5 Tree Swallow eggs. Swallows and Chickadees are protected by law so we must allow them use of the facilities. House Sparrow nests are removed weekly.
Baby Barred Owl
A vacancy sign is still posted on the Purple Martin house. The birds must not know what they could experience in this house; free housing including maid service, beautiful surroundings and lots of flying insects.

In March a member of the Photography committee snapped a photo of an Osprey flying over Margaret's Pond grasping a good sized fish in his talons. Warblers are migrating through so bird watchers will be regular visitors through May. An Audubon Burroughs Society group visited the Prairie on April 30 and recorded 15 species of birds in an hour.
Kentucky Warbler
Susan and Leon Smith helped a fourth grade Girl Scout group earn a wildlife badge on April 18. John and Laura Bosnak will lead two more bird walks for volunteers on May 27 and June 3 and 4. Walks will begin at 9am and be limited to 10 participants.
