Chair's Corner...
By Karen Haake

Karen HaakeSummer is a wonderful time to revel in nature's beauty, especially its glorious flowers. Our love affair with flowers has blossomed with such joy and enthusiasm in the past few years - visitors to the Arboretum marvel at the color and beauty that can be found throughout the gardens.

The time has come to expand our greenhouse operations, and FOTA is pleased to announce that a donation of $125,000 is being offered to the city to build a second greenhouse. Volunteers grew 23,000 plants this past winter, pushing the greenhouse to capacity and overflowing into the smaller frame house.

ClematisThis donation comes with great excitement, as it is a significant gift from the FOTA organization. Each dollar has been raised with lots of hard work and effort by all the membership. This gift will also mean more opportunities to work in the greenhouses, so be sure to get on the waiting list. We will also need the help of volunteers to get the additional plants in the ground come spring. Perhaps a "Done in a Day" project.

Design work is just beginning and then bids and contracts have to be done. Ideally, the building would get started this fall, but much depends on contractors' schedules. We will be sure to keep you apprised of the progress.

Come, take a walk, explore the Arboretum, see the flowers and watch us grow.

He Will Be Missed

DuaneThreafeather Duane Threafeather, our Native American flute player who has graced the Luminary Walk with his gift of music for many years, recently passed away.

Duane has not been well for many months, but despite not feeling his best, he continued to play his wooden reeds at last year's Luminary Walk. His music floated through the trees and brought a mood of tranquility over the gardens. If you would like to send condolences to his family or a donation to the gardens in his memory, they can be sent to OP Arboretum, 8909 W. 179th Street, Overland Park, KS 66085.

PanapolliJuly2Attracting and Nurturing Butterflies in Your Garden
Saturday, August 29, 10:00 am - 11:30 am
Learn how to recognize, attract, and protect these wonderful creatures in your own garden. Michelle Crozier's interest in herbs accidentally led her to a 6 or 8 year study of butterflies. Her curious and analytical nature allowed her to capture the magnificent transformations of caterpillars to butterflies and moths on film and video. Michelle has an MBA and has been a gardener and nature lover since childhood. Class fee $10 per person.

Reservations are required. Contact Phyllis Merrick at 913-685-3604 or at volunteercoordinator@opkansas.org. 10% discount for FOTA members. Download and print the complete 2009 Class Schedule.

New FOTA Board Member

Maher-Williams Margaret-Maher Williams is a committed community volunteer. She has chaired golf tournaments, served on numerous committees and helped improve the lives of many through her volunteer efforts.

A talented artist, she came from Des Moines to Kansas City to attend the Art Institute and never left. Today she shares her love of art with Alzheimer patients, teaching a weekly watercolor class through the Memories in the Making project.

Before she took early retirement, Margaret was a successful business woman, owning her own firm and specializing in Sales and Sales Management recruitment. Now she spends her time on a variety of interests that range from photography, gardening, and floral arrangement to golf and traveling.

She and her husband Chris like to spend quiet evenings hosting friends with good food, wine and lively conversation.

Margaret brings many talents to the board, and she looks forward to taking a spark of an idea and helping to see it to completion.
