Chair's Corner...
By Karen Haake
The final numbers aren't in, but FOTA had a terrific plant sale this year. Good weather, beautiful plants and enthusiastic shoppers all help the bottom line. The profit supports Friends of the Arboretum activities at the Arboretum. Thanks to our plant sale co-chairs Phyllis Merrick and Don Tetzlaff for their leadership. (Plant Sale photo by Bob Fowler)Hurry to the Arboretum to catch the final blooms in the demonstration Iris garden. Visitors from across the country have been coming by bus and car to view these new specimens. They have strolled our gardens, spent countless minutes getting the perfect photograph and admired nature while comparing notes with other enthusiastic gardeners from the comfort of a bench. Work is progressing well on our new Cohen Iris garden. Benches and sidewalks are in place, the plant material has been delivered, and we just need the weather to cooperate so the project can be completed. Spring is a glorious time at the Arboretum. Come, take a walk, explore the Arboretum, see the changes and watch us grow.

Our Donors Make Things Happen
Non-profit organizations are the backbone of almost every arts and cultural entity in our society. They often operate on limited funds and rely heavily on generous donors and volunteers for their support. The Friends of the Arboretum operates in much the same way. Without our donors many of the amenities we have at the Arboretum would not be funded. Donor dollars built the Welcoming Garden. Donor dollars put flowers in the gardens. Donor dollars print the brochures. Donor dollars bought the Copper, Chopper, Hopper and the Standing Couple sculptures Donor dollars feed the birds and build their homes. Donor dollars get new gardens started.
Donor acknowledgement is reflected on the Donor board in the EEVC. Items such as trees and benches have their own individual markers. Bench availability varies throughout the year. The placement is determined by the Master Plan and garden design. FOTA currently has stone and dragonfly benches available for adoption, but the purchase of trees has been suspended indefinitely.

Your gift, large or small is very important to the continued growth and enhancement of the Arboretum. These donations, working collectively, can build the Train Garden or an additional Greenhouse. On your next visit, view the gardens with a donor's eye. See the donations at work. Each and every dollar is appreciated. In addition to your membership donation the people listed at left made a monetary or in-kind donation to the Arboretum in 2008.

Bluebird Numbers Soared in '08
By Sue Davidson
This is the beginning of the third year of operation of the bluebird trail and we have recently seen bluebirds and heard their song. They have started their brooding season. Nest building started in late March and by April 6, six nests were completed. On April 8, Judy Moecker observed two bluebird eggs in one of the nests.
Bluebird trails were established throughout the country to remediate the decline in their population caused by loss of their natural habitat due to urban expansion and other factors.
Last year we were greatly encouraged when the number of nests and bluebirds fledged were almost twice the 2007 values. We hope for even better results in 2009.
The bluebird trail consists of 27 nest boxes mounted on poles so that the boxes are about five feet above the ground. Bluebirds usually nest in cavities in trees and the boxes largely mimic those cavities but also have features in their design that provide protection from snakes, raccoons and other predators. Two boxes were contributed by Doc and Diane Gover and 25 were built by volunteers Bob Buehler, Hugh McCreery, other volunteers and Boy Scouts. Hugh and Bob keep the boxes in good condition.
