Chair's Corner...
By Karen Haake When spring flowers begin blooming, artists take out their brushes to capture the beauty on canvas, leaving the viewer with their vision long after the blooms have faded. Art of all types will be on display at the Arboretum during the coming months. Our annual sculpture exhibit will begin May 11th and continue through the month of September. This event, featuring over 30 pieces of art from regional artists and galleries is a delightful addition to the Arboretum gardens. In mid-May the Senior Art Council will be hanging their paintings in the EEVC. The work by these mature artists will remain through Memorial weekend. June brings the return of the Plein Aire painters. These talented artists paint during the cooler times of the day in our gardens and then finish the work in their studios. Again this year, a number of paintings, done during these Plein Aire sessions will be available for purchase at STEMS-a garden soiree held on June 27th at the Arboretum. If you are interested in being a volunteer for STEMS or wish to purchase tickets, please contact Teresa Stohs at teresa.stohs@artsandrec-op.org. We hope to see you at our plant sale, May 7,8 and 9. While you are there, take a walk, explore the Arboretum, see the changes and watch us grow.

Adopt-A-Garden
The 2009 Adopt-A-Garden program is off to a great start. Whole Foods Market (7401 W. 91st St. and 6621 W. 119th St., Overland Park) has adopted the Cohen Iris Garden and the National Iris Convention Garden. The Xeriscape Garden will be cared for by its adoptive company, Midland Loan Services, Inc. (10851 Mastin, Overland Park). The family of Baby William Semrau has adopted the Children's Garden.

The Adopt-A-Garden program provides invaluable assistance to the staff in expanding and maintaining the Arboretum gardens. Last year's Adopt-A-Garden volunteers relished their time working in the gardens as much as visitors enjoy seeing the results of their efforts. We are proud of the work these volunteers are doing.
