The Big Picture: Slow Food USA Update
Have you heard of the Gravenstein Apple? In this article from the Slow Food USA blog, you can learn more about the efforts other Slow Food Chapters are making to ensure and protect the health and biodiversity of their foodways. The article explains the procedure for nominating a food to the Slow Food Presidia, a program run by the Slow Food Foundation for Biodiversity.
Did you know that Gravenstein apples can be found in Julian? The Gravenstein apples at Raven Hill Orchard are ready to be picked in late summer/early fall.

Last Month's Happenings
Slow Food Urban San Diego, led by our Food Justice Committee and students at USD, hosted their second Food on Film event with the screening of "What's on Your Plate," a documentary film about kids and food politics. Representatives from Olivewood Gardens and the IRC were there to reach out to students. The event was well-attended and future screenings are in the works!
Slow Food Urban San Diego Education Co-Chairperson, Hillary Noyes, led a class on easy at-home bread baking for Slow Food UCSD members at UCSD on February 12th. Hillary, taught the students the forgiving and time-sparing methods taught in "Artisan Bread in 5 Minutes a Day" that work well for college students, who are often at a loss for time and extra money. The class baked fresh baguettes and pizzas and enjoyed them as a group. Class participants also made a batch of French Bread dough to take home and bake. Hillary hopes to hold similar classes for other Slow Food on Campus chapters in San Diego as well as for our Slow Food Urban San Diego community in the near future.
 | Bubba Sugarman and Professor James Nieh |
On February 27th, over 100 participants and numerous bees (in secure demonstration hives) were buzzing at the recentMysterious World of Bees evening held in conjunction with the International House at UCSD and the UCSD Slow Foodcampus chapter. The evening included a honey tasting, local honey from Mikolich Honey, short clips from Queen of the Sun, and phenomenal speakers addressing topics related to current scientific research being conducted both locally and globally as well as how to get involved as a local beekeeper. Speakers included: UCSD Professor James Nieh, International House Visiting Scholar Guntima Suwannapong,San Diego Beekeeping Society's Vice President Eric Robinson, and Samuel "Bubba" Sugarman (4-H participant, youngest member of the San Diego Beekeeping Society and CEO of Bubba's Bee Biz). Many thanks to our partners and participants in this informative and delicious event!
