Well Fed Visit to Campbells Prime Meats - 29th July

Prime Meat specialists Campbells invited the LBA to a prime meeting in late July, as thirty members toured the manufacturer's facility near Whitecross, just to the west of the Royal Burgh.  Simon Walton found the experience to be much more than a utility warehouse for cheap cuts.

Campbells Comes Back From A Roasting

Doing our best not to avoid the clichés, this is a two-fold 'rise from the ashes' story.

First, the facility is housed in Heatherfield, the former Henderson's Abattoir at Lathallen, which, after a multi-mullion pound refit, has been adapted as Campbells head quarters and processing plant - where the company prepares prime cuts from Scottish and overseas farms, and handles their wide ranges of fish and other deli products.

Now, if there's one thing the LBA membership is not going to turn down, it's an invitation to one of Scotland's best known food producers, especially when a visit to the best staff canteen in the country is included in the tour.

Herded together for a visit!
Campbells visit
The fact that Campbells is there at all is a story in itself - since the company faced ruin after their previous base of operations in Broxburn went up in a spectacular blaze in 2009 - a fire that totally destroyed the company's infrastructure and threatened to scorch Campbells from the lexicon of Scottish business.

CANAL FUN DAY

Linlithgow Union Canal Society will be running their annual CANAL FUN DAY on Sunday 15th August.

Linlithgow Gala Queen will start things off at 1.00pm and there will be boat trips, the museum and Tea Room, stalls and rounding off the afternoon the Cardboard Boat Race, starter's gun 3.00pm.

The Business Association will once again have a stall on the day and Mike Vickers would like to hear from some volunteers to come along for an hour or so to meet and greet and spread the word. If you're pushed for time then come along anyway to say hello and maybe pick up some tips for the design and construction of an LBA cardboard boat for next year!

Contact Mike by e-mail or call him on 01506 848561.

NEW MEMBER ARTICLE: BOWDEN SPRINGS TROUT FISHERY

Bowden SpringsSitting just to the west of Linlithgow, Bowden Springs Fishery offers superb fly and bait fishing for Rainbow, Blue and Brown Trout - and have the photos to prove it!

Originally constructed as a water reservoir serving Bo'ness, the Fishery has been run since 2004 by Jim and Jacqui Gargaro. In 2006 Bowden Springs was voted one of the top three fisheries in Scotland by readers of Trout Fisherman, sponsors of the popular Troutmaster Competition and has gone on to acquire a deserved reputation for a quality fishing experience.

The Fishery has two lochs - Bowden and Carribber.  The former,  a two acre, fly-only loch, is stocked with Rainbow and Blue Trout while Carribber covers 5 acres and offers fly and bait fishing - one of only a few locally to allow bait - for Rainbow, Blue and Brown Trout.

Bowden SpringsThere is ample parking space and to back up facilities on the lochs there is a well stocked Tackle Shop and Anglers Bothy to provide a wee bit of respite for anglers on the odd occasion when the weather is not behaving itself.

If you are a beginner then expert casting tuition is available along with tackle hire to provide all you need to sample the sport. Corporate parties are catered for too so if your business is looking for a bit of team building fun then Bowden Springs has plenty to offer.

Their website has full details of all that is on offer and directions to the lochs.
