Having struggled through the worst recession since the early twentieth century followed in short order by the most prolonged and severe winter conditions in living memory the business community, along with everyone else, now has to deal with the fallout from an unusually productive volcano. Things can only get better!
This month we have a report on the highly successful Linlithgow Futures Game initiated by the Association and Linlithgow Aspires and organised brilliantly for the occasion by Karen Cadell of cadell2 Architects and Designers.
We are pleased to welcome three new members this month, one of whom, LIFT Financial introduces his business below and makes an irresistible introductory offer to all LBA members. From an award winning firm of pension advisors this is an offer that all members would be wise to take very seriously - at any time, but particularly in these uncertain times. We'll be hearing shortly from Gail Laing of Millstone and Diane Bryson of Quality Computer Cleaning.
Cross Views offers thoughts on competition, Climate Challenge has news of an important event and there is a first notice of a generous invitation to members to join the team at Campbell's Prime Meats in July for a tour of their superb new premises at Whitecross to be followed by an opportunity to sample their finest products. Members interested in taking part in this visit, which is planned for July 28, 12 till 2.00pm, should express their interest to the LBA immediately - contact@linlithgowbusiness.org.uk
.........and remember you can use the newsletter to promote your business, advise of new products and services or special offers or events: contact@linlithgowbusiness.org.uk |

Linlithgow has its own City Game |
|
Five teams, drawn from across the whole Linlithgow community, took part in The Future City Game held on 24th March under the auspices of the British Council and the guidance of Architecture + Design Scotland. The Game was generously hosted by Sun / Oracle and has facilitated by Monika Komarowska specially flown in from Warsaw. Monika had already run 7 successful games across Europe.
The Game normally takes two days but we packed it into one hectic day. We started with briefings on Linlithgow as it is at present and its immediate future and what we might have to cope with in 2035 where energy costs could be 10 times what they are today.
The five teams:
- sat down to work for each to come up with a solutions as to how the Linlithgow community will cope, sustain and prosper in what will be extremely challenging circumstances. Needless to say the teams came up with very varying solutions but all featured self sufficiency.
- solutions were then subjected to examination by three teams of local experts; business, community and one from the Academy. The Academy students are of course the most interested of all of us as to life in 2035
- presented their solutions to everyone and we all had a chance to vote.

"There is nothing in the world that some man cannot make a little worse and sell a little cheaper, and he who considers price only is that man's lawful prey".
John Ruskin (1819 - 1900)
If you're running a successful business and you're selling a product that plenty of people want to buy, chances are that one day sooner or later someone else will open a similar business nearby and some of your customers will go to them. It stands to reason, its only natural, and no business owner should be surprised when it happens. We all face competition from time to time.
Typically the new competition will be cheaper than you and more aggressive with their marketing. Why? Because having made the decision to start a new business they desperately need to get a firm foothold in your market. It doesn't matter what kind of business you run, aggressive competition will hit you at some time or other, and some of your customers will move because that's how free trade and market forces work.

Saturday 8th May 2010 10-4pm
St Michaels Kirk Hall, Cross House
Entrance - FREE
Linlithgow Climate Challenge are organising a special Energy Showcase for Saturday 8th May. This will bring together experts on energy saving and renewable technology all under one roof.
Please come along and find out what options there are for our homes and also for our community buildings. We'll also have examples of other energy projects around Scotland and will explain the current energy issues we face for the next 10-40 years.
Approved installers will be there talking about solar panels, heat pumps, log stoves, pellet boilers, wind turbines and a whole host of other technologies. Some equipment will be there for you to see too.
We'll have a model of the new Beecraigs ECO centre on display, as well as advice stalls from the Energy Saving Trust, Community Energy Scotland, WLC Planning and others.
This is an excellent chance to meet and talk with experts, to see some real local examples of typical homes that have been energy rated at today's standards and also for their 'true upgraded potential'. Food will be provided by Slow Food Linlithgow and there will also be a kidz zone to allow the adults some time to talk.
