The Business Association has been working with members of the Town Centre Management Group to review security arrangements in the Town Centre. While there has been CCTV coverage for some time there is now considered to be a need to upgrade equipment and facilities to meet current needs.
As part of the review process Linlithgow has been compared to neighbouring towns and there is a feeling that much could be gained by taking measures to generate wider community involvement in the process of creating a relaxing, trouble free experience for visitors and residents alike.
A system linking retailers, police and possibly members of the public by radio has been demonstrated by Shopsafe and is currently under review by the Town Management Group. Used in conjunction with CCTV, this system has proved highly popular elsewhere.
The views of those most affected by such issues would be very welcome. Is the current CCTV system adequate, is there a feeling that security could be better, how many "incidents" do High Street businesses experience, would a system linking businesses directly be considered useful?
All comments would be very welcome (e-mail). |

It's February - Farmhouse Breakfast time!
Once again it's time for members to enjoy a wonderful breakfast feast courtesy of Nan Hay and family at Belsyde House. Those who have attended before will know you're in for a real treat, first timers - eat lightly the night before!
This month we're highlighting the first major Linlithgow Aspires information gathering exercise with notice of the Future Cities Game, sponsored by the British Council.
With average life expectancy increasing year on year, shouldn't we all be doing a lot more to reduce the strain on the nation's finances - or at least, what's left of them! Dr An Dau of Linlithgow Chiropractic points the way.
There's a call for feedback on Town Security, CCTV etc from High Street businesses in particular but views from everyone are welcome. For what else is on in and around the Town, check the "In this Issue" panel alongside.
.........and remember you can use the newsletter to promote your business, advise of new products and services or special offers or events: contact@linlithgowbusiness.org.uk | |

LINLITHGOW ASPIRES - FUTURE CITIES GAME |
A Future Cities Game will take place in Linlithgow in March 2010. The aim of the Future Cities Game is to assist communities in generating the best ideas to improve quality of life over the next 10-20 years.
To ensure that the game is tailored to the local context The British Council are working with Linlithgow Aspires to choose a theme, location and potential participants for the game. Up to 25 people with a range of skills and from a range of backgrounds (age, gender, ethnicity and experience) from the community will be invited to take part. Players will work in teams to identify potential future challenges facing Linlithgow (environmental, social, economic and cultural) and to propose design solutions to overcome them. These will be tested and refined with the help of practitioners and community members.
At the end of the game the stakeholders are presented with the ideas and players, observers and stakeholders vote for the winning idea. Proposals must be sustainable and realizable. |
Linlithgow Business Association event - March 31st 2010
is a family run business located on the eastern outskirts of Linlithgow. As new members of Linlithgow Business Association, we are hosting a Members' event at Kingsfield on Wednesday 31 March 2010.
At this event we will showcase our operation to the members with a brief tour of our excellent facilities followed by a presentation on our business and a question & answer session.
The aims of the evening are as follows:
- Provide an opportunity for members to meet and socialise
- Provide an opportunity for a member to showcase their operation
- Provide an opportunity for all members to give feedback to Kingsfield but also perhaps to learn something from the session that they might use in their own business
The event will officially begin at 7.30pm but we will be running a fun putting competition at 7pm for those who can make it along early.
LBA will be making a small charge to members to cover the cost of catering for the event and Kingsfield have agreed to provide the venue free of charge to LBA.
We look forward to welcoming you to Kingsfield. |
Is Britain in an Economic or Health Crisis?
In 2008/2009 The UK spent £94 Billion on healthcare £2000 per person approx and in 2010 this is expected to reach £110 billion, a 15% increase. Furthermore: Scotland had the highest rate of spending on the NHS, more hospital doctors, GPs and nurses per person, thus, the highest levels of poor health.
The costs are not only in your pocket in terms of the national insurance and taxes you pay, but also for you and your future generations. The modern day health system is a cancer that is bankrupting the country and only a completely different approach will cure this chronic problem.
The only solution is to have more people healthy and less people sick.
We need to be actively involved, educate ourselves on what health is, and what it is not.

Is Social Networking the New Antisocial? |
What are the merits of social networking? I don't know about you, but I just don't have time to sit next to my computer all day, checking my entries on Digg, Bebo, and a dozen RSS feeds. However, that's not necessarily what my clients think, nor is it how my competitors behave. Like it or not, the web is an avenue to market that cannot be ignored.
Many LBA members are already using the sophisticated newsletter services, provided by the likes of Constant Contact - in fact that's how you're getting this newsletter. There are plenty of services out there. I'll not recommend which sites - it's very much a matter of taste, and by the time you read this, there will be a new service to try. The important thing is that engaging with the web is vital, or you'll simply be considered non-existent by a swathe of your potential market. Much of the foundation effort for my new creative consultancy - MEDIAfabrik - is down to getting the web and networking in place, before we even introduce ourselves to a client.

Believe it or not we're still getting regular enquiries from people wanting to start new businesses in Linlithgow and needing premises on the High Street. Most of the enquiries relate to the Victoria Walk project, but with the best will in the world space in the proposed new development won't be available for 2 to 3 years at least, even if construction progresses at maximum speed. It seems that there are still plenty of people that believe Linlithgow is a good place to start a business and I can't say I disagree with them!

Connecting rural Scotland
Promoting rural growth
What is the Scottish National Rural Network?
It's a major initiative supported by the Scottish Government to connect rural Scotland, in all its diversity, to promote economic and community development.
At a national level, the Network is promoted by the Scottish Rural Gathering, a national event, and the Scotland National Rural Network website.
At a regional level, there is a series of regional events intended to promote and develop links and networks across the different individuals, businesses, organisations, communities and sectors in each region of rural Scotland.
What's in it for me?
The opportunity to find out the latest news about rural development and funding opportunities, to hear about some excellent projects and businesses and to connect with a wide range of other people who live and work in your region and elsewhere.
