LADAS NEEDS YOU!
The Linlithgow and District Allotment Society (LADAS) has been working hard for over a year to try to find land for allotments in the Linlithgow area and the campaign now needs a shot in the arm.

The group was formed as a result of early meetings of Linlithgow Climate Challenge, and in 2008 LADAS had 122 members, became constituted and presented a written Proposal to West Lothian Council, officially requesting allotments in Linlithgow. There has never been a tradition of allotments in Linlithgow, and unfortunately there is very little suitable Council owned land available. To read more, click here.

PRICKLY CHALLENGE CONQUERED

Many thanks to all the LBA members - and all those from all the other organisations - who came along to help create the Holly Balls which can now be seen decorating the High Street. It was a great effort from all concerned and the job was done in record time.

Hopefully next year, the judicious use of available funds combined with volunteer effort can build on what has been achieved this year, add to the enjoyment of the High Street and help encourage more people to solve more of their Christmas shopping challenges in our High Street.

Interestingly the word used by several people to describe their experience was "therapeutic"!  Can't be bad - free therapy - let's have more of it.

LBA: QUARTERLY BUSINESS SURVEY RESULTS

LINLITHGOW BUSINESS ASSOCIATION: OPTIMISM AND REALISM REVEALED IN FIRST QUARTERLY BUSINESS SURVEY.

Over all sectors, the first Quarterly Review of businesses in Linlithgow shows there is a mood of cautious but firm optimism for the year ahead. Reviewing the previous 12 month's trading most businesses seem to have factored in the effects of the current turmoil in the economy and appear to have taken it in their stride.

With 66% saying they are quite optimistic and 20% saying they are very optimistic for the coming year, there is little or no feeling of pessimism in contrast to some of the views being expressed in the national media. However, there is still some way to go before the effects of any recovery work their way through the system.

In terms of sectors, most optimistic for the coming year are retail/manufacturing respondents followed closely by professionals and service providers while at the other end of the scale responses from tourism related businesses, contracting and farming show most concern.

As for the past year, most businesses have made allowances for trading conditions with only 5% reporting business was worse than expected, against 18% whose performance last year exceeded their expectations.

Overall, the pattern of reasonable satisfaction with the past year and optimism for the next suggests that Linlithgow businesses believe they have weathered the storm and are well placed to take advantage of the recovery - when it happens.

If you would like to comment on this survey, or contribute to the next quarterly survey, please send an email.
