Black pudding with beetroot and apple
Here's a recipe for one of our most under-rated autumn vegetables - beetroot. Don't let pickled beetroot put you off - this is totally different. Fresh raw beetroot is widely available now, at farmers markets and even in the supermarkets - and it's delicious.

Linlithgow Aspires Success Well, the LBA's efforts appear to be paying off. Having played the catalyst role to ensure Aspire gets off to the best possible start the wider community is now rising to the opportunities ahead. A number of emerging leaders have come forward and are working with their teams to progress a variety of workstreams required to take the project to the next stages.

Beecraigs Eco-visitor Centre
Plans are progressing for a state of the art eco-centre at Beecraigs Country Park. The new centre, designed by LBA members EKJN architects, is to be built on vacant land currently used for growing fodder for the deer herd. It will include a new entrance to the country park and a new entrance to the popular caravan park.

Welcome to the November issue of the LBA newsletter!
Despite the continuing feeling of doom and gloom brought on by the banking crisis several members have good news to report and are pressing on with plans for development and for growing their businesses. Below, Architects EK: JN outline plans for the development of Beecraigs and throw down a challenge to the business community - how can we encourage more of Beecraigs 400,000 annual visitors to visit Linlithgow? (By way of comparison, the Palace attracts approx 60,000 visitors annually.) And Ocean 70 has gone international and brought business to Linlithgow from New York - and found time to tell them what a great place Linlithgow is for business. There's also news on the Postal Strike survey, Network Rail's plans for rail transport affecting Linlithgow, a review of our first New Members' Meeting and more.............
...and if you missed our earlier email on LBA member Anne Daly's article in The Herald on the success of Go Green Bags, click here to read more.
Finally, the newsletter is a free opportunity to promote your business to other local businesses and we are always pleased to receive articles or members offers for inclusion (contact us by email or phone: 01506 510333 or mobile: 07767 713024).

REFLECTIONS OF THE NEW MEMBERS' EVENING FROM A NEW MEMBER
|
I attended the above last week, not really sure what to expect. I'd recently also attended the AGM, which was enthusiastic & lively, so I was hoping for at least another dose of the same.
My view on the evening was that it produced all that & more. I liked the enthusiasm & energy from most, and the willingness to want to do something for the greater good of the Community, which will of course, help all our businesses in varying ways, if we deliver on that. I also liked the suggestions that were put forward on how to up our profile & image, how to best stay connected & strengthen that, how to help & promote each other's businesses, and how to help bring others more into the Community, eg schoolchildren.
Now that I and my fellow new members are no longer new Members, what now? To read more, please click here.

THE LBA AND THE POSTAL STRIKE |
The response to our survey of Linlithgow businesses suggests that the postal strike has had little direct impact on business to date. No business took the opportunity to say that disruption to deliveries had had any direct impact on their activities to date and one commented to the effect that deliveries are so unreliable anyway they were not likely to notice any difference. In terms of which side is to blame for the industrial action, while the majority (52%) of respondents do not support the strike there is a feeling that neither party comes out of this well. Only 6% supported the strike action but 42% felt it was not as straightforward as "yes" or "no". As one member pointed out "both sides say they have agreed to arbitration at ACAS so why is there a strike." Running though respondent's comments is the view that something must be done to modernise business practice within the service, that strike action should not have been taken and that postal workers have probably undermined their own future employment prospects within the service. It never ceases to amaze me how small the world is.
A couple of months ago we were approached by the United Nations in Brussels to help them on the design side with a web project they were having difficulty with, the project name was www.coolplanet2009.org. The UN, I thought, fantastic, what a great client to have on our credentials and certainly something to shout about. We completed the work on time and within the tight budget we were given and the client was more than happy with the results.
A couple of weeks later they contacted us again wondering if we would like to help design the identity for the UN climate change conference in Copenhagen - cue jumping around like a looney. (One of our suggested designs is shown below).
Unfortunately this job was tied up in red tape and went no further than the presentation stage, but they liked the designs and so did we. To read more, please click here.

A to B and E to G
This week Jon Newey and Mike Vickers had a good lunch at Vu restaurant organised by the Chamber of Commerce and Network Rail.
Network Rail presented information about their progress with construction of the Airdrie to Bathgate railway line (the A to B line). They gave the assembled group a snapshot of what is complete on the A to B project so far. This was followed by was a brief Q & A session about the wider implications for transport links and business prospects throughout the central belt.
Network Rail mentioned that they have run a number of theoretical models to analyse how passenger numbers might change on various parts of the rail network once the new line is operational. Their assessment suggests that very few people will migrate from using Linlithgow station to using one of the new stations because the Edinburgh to Glasgow line through Linlithgow (the E to G line) will still be the fastest route across the country. Some of the new stations on the A to B line will have more car parking, though....

CHRISTMAS STREET DECORATIONS
|
CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS Following the last Town Management meeting when a shortfall in funding for Xmas decorations and hanging baskets was highlighted, the Business Association has contributed to a proposal which will allow the Town Centre lampposts to be decorated through the Christmas period and on into the spring.
With support from Civic Trust and the Rotary all that's needed now is some volunteer assistance to help prepare Holly Balls. A couple of dozen volunteers are required for a couple of hours each on Saturday 14th November, from 9.30am. No experience necessary, full training on the job!
Please come along to the old Astrantia shop on the corner at the Cross -with a pair of gardening gloves - and lend a hand or two! Whether for an hour or 4 hours all volunteers appreciated.
Please come along and help to decorate the Town for Christmas.
