RECIPE FROM HYNDBERRY

Apple and raisin chutney

A great way to use up a glut of apples is to turn them into chutney. This makes them last all year! And a jar of homemade chutney is a lovely present to receive. You can also use pears in this recipe.

MEMBERSHIP UPDATE

I am very pleased that our membership continues to grow.  See below for who's joined this month.

We are now 85 and our target is 100 by the year end.  We have looked at who our members are; we want the LBA to represent the WHOLE business community but we have very few tradesmen and no farmers.

So, Members, tell your builders, painters & decorators, tilers, joiners, glaziers and electricians what a great bunch we are and we need them in the LBA to make the Association even better.

And Members do please persuade your local farmer to come and join us.  In this time of Climate Change LOCAL farmers are key.

LBA's QUESTION TIME AND ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

LBA's annual Question Time event was a big success again this year. The formal business of the AGM was despatched in good time, confirming David Tait as Chair for another year, with Jim Hay remaining as Treasurer. Jon Newey was reinstalled as Vice Chair and Mike Vickers stepped into the role of Membership Secretary. Our Honorary Secretary for the past 18 months, Anne Daly, stepped down and the committee thanked her for all her hard work.

David Tait gave a rousing summary of the year's events and explained the committee's proposal for the LBA to become a company limited by guarantee; a proposal that was approved by all present. The prestigious post of Company Secretary remains available, so all readers are invited to volunteer! With the business of the AGM swiftly completed the Question Time event got under way!

THOUGHTS ON LINLITHGOW!

What are we doing in Linlithgow?
We have a beautiful town centre but no way to access it!

We have a long narrow town stretching nearly two miles from Linlithgow Bridge to the end of Springfield and no sensible facilities for the 15000 population to visit the centre of the town. Indeed, why have a centre if it cannot be used by cars. We love our cars and cars are here to stay. They will not use petrol in a few years time but they will still exist. The original model-T designed by Henry Ford, to take an example, used ethanol as its fuel.

So, we will keep our cars but what to do in Linlithgow?
Build a bypass to further deplete the town centre?

One option, and one that has been suggested by the Civic Trust many times, is to park our cars underground.
The bus station is likely to go to some developer because that is what happens to any space in Linlithgow. Anyway, putting people in the centre of the town is a great idea - more customers for the local businesses. And, more council tax for the council to fund facilities and town improvements. We have a High Street that would be the pride of any town in Scotland. Only problem, it is always in gridlock!

I recently holidayed in France and drove into Paris! I know, mad thing to do, but with three children and an air-conditioned comfortable car - why not. Then I simply parked near the attractions I wanted to see. Trocadero (opposite the Eiffel Tower), Notre Dame and Le Louvre, and I parked when I got to each one. Just drop down a ramp and underground into four, five and six storey car parks - fantastic. Yes I paid, but then all parking costs money, and it was cheaper than I pay when I go to get someone at Edinburgh airport. We bought gifts and kept them in the car. We basically did what every person in the UK does when they go to large retail parks. Took the car and parked outside our destination.

So what should we do?
Easy! Prom
ote the centre of our town as a retail destination - with an underground car park. That way, we can continue to take the car and truly start to enjoy the centre of our beautiful town.

LINLITHGOW ASPIRES
Linlithgow Aspires

Following a long period of gestation, Linlithgow Aspires has now emerged and been put before the community-at-large at a series of open events over the past three weeks. Judging by the initial enthusiastic response from a wide range of participants, Aspires is set to take on a central role in Linlithgow's evolution.

The founding principle is, ultimately, to have active, voluntary involvement of every section of the Linlithgow community from the youngest to the oldest, across all sectors, public and private and all shades and grades of political opinion. The initial show of enthusiastic commitment and offers of active involvement in specific areas arising from this series of meetings augers well for the future. Several key workstreams have been identified and individuals and groups have taken responsibility for their progress.

The next stage is now being planned and further details will be made available on www.linlithgowaspires.co.uk as soon as they are available. The website has the facility to post comments so don't hold back - Aspires is open to all comments and particularly welcomes constructive criticism.

BIDS UPDATE

Town Centres: The Fight Back - Conference

Having earlier in the year decided that the LBA would not pursue a BIDS application at this time, we did take on a watching brief and in that connection bring to members' attention a Conference to be held in Perth Concert Hall on 25 November 2009.

The title is Town Centres: The Fight Back and will be hosted by Business Improvement Districts Scotland (BIDS). The Conference will focus on the challenges facing all towns and High Streets across the country and will be an ideal opportunity to learn how other communities are facing up to the threats and opportunities posed by current trading conditions.

While inevitably biased towards town centre businesses, the Conference will also be of relevance to all businesses that are aware that we are stronger and likely to be more influential operating together as a business community.

Ian Davison Porter, Project Director of BIDS:
"The conference will focus on real issues and hopefully stimulate debate about how the fight back for Scotland's town centres and high streets can begin in earnest. I look forward to announcing the full programme in due course."

Earn More, Work Less!

Every business has the potential to be great.
Yours included. And yet the sad reality is that most businesses are not extraordinary. Often they fail to realise their full potential and are a constant source of worry for their owners.
If you want to build an extraordinary business chances are you need to do some things differently.

Not everyone wants to build a large business but most people who are running a small one would like to find ways to do things more efficiently and profitably-to free up their time and earn more money for their efforts.
This is what produces a more valuable asset (your business) and a better lifestyle for you and your family.

So, how do you do that? That's where we come in.
