 LOOKING FOR HOST FAMILIES

Language Room Logo

Each summer and throughout the year, we run intensive, English courses at The Language Room.

We are actively recruiting for host families to welcome students from continental Europe who are keen to learn and improve their English.

The students are either 12-18 years, 18-24 years or professional people.

Anyone can be a host family; do not hesitate to contact us so we can tell you a little more! Most of our host families who did it last year will host again as they enjoyed it!

LBA SURVEY

The LBA recently issued a survey to all its members and was pleased with the response which at 20% was above normal.

The questionnaire covered a lot of ground and covered areas including reasons for joining LBA, whether the LBA had met expectations, content and frequency of meetings etc

TWO LOCAL BUSINESSES SET THE STANDARD FOR LINLITHGOW'S HIGH STREET

In trading conditions described as the worst in living memory Linlithgow's business community should take great encouragement from having not only one but two top class booksellers setting the standard for business excellence in the heart of the Town.

Blast Off Books and The Linlithgow Bookshop were included in the top 5 in the Scottish regional section of the prestigious Independent Bookshop of the Year Award 2009.

 The Linlithgow Bookshop

Their impressive achievement establishes a standard for excellence which is the key ingredient for the creation of a vibrant High Street and unique shopping experience for our many visitors and the community at large.

The Awards are organised by Publishing News Ltd in association with the Booksellers Association. Jo Henry, MD of Publishing News summed up " the terrific line up of bookshops goes to show that small retailers who demonstrate passion and commitment to good service can stand out even in a tough financial climate".

MAKE LINLITHGOW BILINGUAL

Our dear Mary Queen of Scots was crowned Queen of France in 1559. With the strong ties to Linlithgow you decide to visit France and strengthen the 'Auld Alliance'.

So why Linlithgow? What is this story about?

Well every year we are inundated by tourists and every year we want them to keep spending money and keep coming back! But how do we make them feel at ease. We cannot learn all their languages. We certainly cannot learn all their customs. But we can make a little gesture.

One or two words in their language show acceptance. We always feel at ease when someone recognises our origins and uses some of our language. Descriptions on menus and signs help a visitor relax. And a comfortable tourist will always spend more money.

We all know ourselves when we travel. If you find somewhere welcoming and friendly you often go back and you will certainly tell your friends.

So, here's my plan! Let's make Linlithgow bilingual or even multilingual.

LBA BREAKFAST MEETINGS

LBA logoBuilding on some excellent responses to our member survey, we propose to improve the opportunities for members and potential members to follow up on their suggestions and play an active part in improving business prospects in the Town.

To help achieve better communication and exchange of ideas we will hold open "breakfast" meetings at the Star & Garter Hotel twice monthly on a Wednesday starting at 8.00am. We hope this will give an opportunity to those businesses which find it difficult to attend evening meetings to take part before the start of the business day. There will be no obligation to attend for a particular period of time - members and prospective members have the choice of dropping in to raise a particular issue or to take part in the full meeting.

We feel that this should offer an excellent opportunity for members to participate, bringing in fresh ideas and a wider perspective.

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday 10th June and we look forward to welcoming members between 8.00 and 9.00am. Entrance to the Hotel is either via the entrance from the Car Park on the East side of the Hotel or the rear entrance opposite the Railway Station.

Car parking in Linlithgow

There's not enough car parking in Linlithgow, so the story goes. But only at certain times of the day. Has anyone ever counted the parking spaces? Well, I have. From Edinburgh road in the East to St Ninian's Road in the West and including Manse Road and Strawberry Bank there are 965 freely available public parking spaces in the town, roughly one for every 15 residents.

I know this because the Planning Department asked me to count them in relation to the proposed redevelopment of the Victoria Hall site.

"You need 100 parking spaces on that site" they said.
"No we don't" we replied.
"Prove it" they said.
 So we have.

The proposed leisure facilities on the Victoria Hall site will have their peak demand after 5.00pm, on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, similar to all the other bars, pubs and restaurants in the town. At that time of day only half the parking spaces in the town are in use, and the other 450 to 480 are empty. I know, because I've counted them. I counted them at 5:00, again at 6:00, at 7:00 and at 8:00 on each of those days.

Question: Would it be good to see Linlithgow being so successful that the parking spaces are all full in the evenings?

Answer: I think it would be a good thing to aim for.

We all know that most of the parking spaces in the town are all full during the day (although the lower deck of the pay-and-display car park is usually quite empty). The cars parked in Linlithgow during the day are not just commuters using the railway station to go elsewhere; there are a lot of people hard at work in the town too. The Council have a lot of staff commuting into the town, so do First Bus, and so do all the wee businesses along the High Street. In a strange way this is something to be proud of, because it is a mark of Linlithgow's success.  If we can get the same parking spaces to be full during the evenings it would be a fantastic benefit to the town! Wouldn't it?....

Dr Raquel Borges - Pregnancy & Postnatal Massage

Pregnancy is a time for great excitement: presenting the transformation of a woman's life. This special time brings many emotional and physical changes.

It can be a time of joy and delight but no one would deny that it can also be a trial.  As your bulge swells and the baby grows, there is strain on your muscles and pressure on your joints. Deep therapeutic techniques can ease all associated conditions such as back pain, fluid retention, breast tenderness, mood swing, leg cramps, sacroiliac pain, constipation, cramp, sciatica, circulation problems, tiredness and numbness.  What's more, particularly for first time mums, it can be an unfamiliar and nerve wracking experience.

I love giving pregnancy massage and believe it is one of the safest and most rewarding things a woman can receive to look after herself during pregnancy.
