In business, energy is an important commodity that is both beneficial for day to day operations but also often overlooked until the accountant reminds you of the cost on your P&L reports!
Linlithgow Climate Challenge have a primary objective to work with residents, businesses and community groups to lower our town's total greenhouse gas emissions. As such, we are constantly monitoring the overall consumption of electricity and gas.
Using available data for 2005-2007 we can observe that total electricity consumed has gone up, whilst gas consumption has decreased. However we need to look closer to realise that the actual quantity of meters has changed over this same period too. Approximately 15% more electricity meters and 15% more electricity used. Gas has come down but not in the same proportions to the number of meters. It's not totally clear why there's no data for Linlithgow North but that could be down to the fact that you need to consume a lot of gas to be detailed in the reports and only 7 users were reported in 2005.

LINLITHGOW ASPIRES - PROGRESS UPDATE |

Since our report last month, the Local Area Committee of West Lothian Council has had further presentations on the way ahead once the current phase of establishing a broad support base in the community has been completed successfully. The presentation on Tuesday 10th March by Wil Tunnell on behalf of Big Town Plan was thought provoking and informative and was well received by the Councillors and officials in attendance. The next step is a final review of the first phase findings on March 24th after which Big Town Plan will present a report to WLC on the outcome. Following that submission it is planned that the next phase will include formation of an Executive Team and undertaking the preparation of a Framework for Linlithgow that will set out how the long-term aspirations of the community are to be identified, captured and then realised. As news of the project begins to spread it has been particularly encouraging to hear from interested individuals and organisations expressing enthusiasm for the project and a willingness to commit. All businesses and individuals with an interest in Linlithgow's future are encouraged to register support by logging on to Linlithgow Aspires |

REVIEW OF JIM MATHER WORKSHOP |
Thinking back to the Workshop facilitated by Jim Mather six months ago in Sun ........ Many LBA members had the privilege to attend the Workshop sponsored by LBA and conducted by Jim Mather, Minister for Enterprise and Tourism last September but some may not have been able to attend and I thought it could be useful to list some of the key points that came out of the workshop particularly as, at least, some will be actively pursued in the Linlithgow Aspires initiative.
Inevitably this is a personal view, which of course it is, but I hope not too personal. Jim took forward the workshop under a number of headings which I shall keep to:
1. Jim started by considering what our Customers, the ordinary people of Linlithgow, hope for from the businesses and other organisations in Linlithgow.
a. They would define our purpose as sustaining and developing commerce whilst ensuring fairness and equity
b. They would want us to measure progress over time through diversity of economy, encouraging more new starts, greater diversity of businesses and hopefully another Sun. They would expect us to encourage tourism and to measure this by increased numbers of visitors and the time and money they spent here. They would wish to see an infrastructure capable of meeting the needs of the Town, particularly in terms of education and better facilities for young people.

Linlithgow is a great destination for bikers. Good roads, good motorway links, cafes, pubs, chip shops, etc etc. but there's nowhere in town for bikes to park.
- On-street parking is limited to 30 minutes throughout the town, discouraging day-trippers.
- Tesco car park has no dedicated motorcycle bay and shoppers get upset if a motorcycle occupies a whole parking space. Parking is limited to 2 hours, discouraging day-trippers.
- The Vennel car park discourages motorcycles, insisting that they pay+display even if not using a parking space (most pay+display car parks in the UK have a 'free' motorcycle area in one of the corners that is inaccessible to cars).
Suggestion: WLC owns a piece of pavement close to the entrance to the Vennel car park that would be perfect for a motorcycle park and would accommodate around 10 bikes.
Work needed:
- Replace existing kerbs with dropped kerbs (~£1500)
- Provide streetlight (for security) and signage (~£1500
- Provide back railings including a bar to padlock back wheels to (~£1500)
Total approx £4500 by Cross Views |

LINLITHGOW ASPIRES - A WINNING TEAM |
Aspires Winning Team
In a cerebral contest involving many of the Academy's finest, a team of Linlithgow Aspires enthusiasts turned in a sparkling performance to overcome worthy opponents at an LAA fund raising Quiz Night at Linlithgow Academy. Across a bewildering range of subjects encompassing the sciences, arts, sport, film and general knowledge the Linlithgow Aspires team led the field in an epic struggle fought right down to the wire. In jubilant form after the event Team Captain, Bob "The Brain" Martin enthused to our reporter "Linlithgow Aspires has led the way tonight as it will, I'm sure, continue to do over the next 10 to 20 years. As we have shown, the depth of talent in the Town is as remarkable as it is untapped. For Linlithgow the future is truly bright." In response to a challenge for a re-match, "The Brain" confirmed that Linlithgow Aspires would be delighted to take on all-comers although he would perhaps require to bring on some subs as one or two of the team, in turning in a magnificent performance on the evening, had maybe pushed things beyond the limit and may need to be rested for the next contest. Captain Bob confirmed, "Squad rotation has always been part of our plan" |
