Tips for Getting Medical Writing Jobs

by Susan E Caldwell, PhD

Tip #2:  Your Resume Needs Work, Because You Need Work!

Your resume is one of the most important weapons in your job-hunting arsenal. Its purpose isn't to get you the job of your dreams, of course. Rather, it is a door opener to the opportunity you seek: a chance to talk with the right people about the job you want. After the door has opened and you've made an appointment for the phone or in-person interview, the rest is up to you. It is during the interview that you show the interviewer whether you're the right person for the job or not. At that point, the resume is no longer the focus--you are, including your knowledge, education, experience, and personality.

Getting the door to open is enormously important in the job search, though. Thus, having the right resume is on the critical path for job-hunting success.

Rather than discuss here the best approaches to writing a resume, I've listed below several web sites that have useful, somewhat overlapping information about this topic. In so doing, I can give you more information than just my opinion, and you can also learn from diverse advisors. Some of the information won't apply if you are in your 40s, 50s, or 60s. Some is meant for students, others for experienced workers. Take from these web sites what works best for you and your situation.
