Document Savvy: Windows 7 Beta

by Angel Bivins

Sorting through all the software updates, best practices for creating documents, and managing your information overload can be be a headache. This week, we're introducing a new article series, Document Savvy, which will address those issues.  I'll do my best to keep you up to date and in the know with what I think might be most interesting to you.  If you want me to research specific topics, email your requests to help@wordangel.com. I'll add your topics to this section so that we can all learn about them.

Windows 7 Beta

The web is all abuzz about Microsoft's "new and improved" operating system, but I don't think you need to upgrade your systems for a while.  The beta version was just released on January 9, and there were so many takers that Microsoft had to briefly shut down to upgrade their servers to handle the downloads.  Get the feeling people are eager to do anything to get rid of Vista?

Interesting New Features of Windows 7

Faster bootup and shutdown: That's what they say, and we hope it works!

Windows Biometric Framework: Support for those who lock their computers with their fingerprints.

Device Stage: Gives you a media center that lets you see all of your devices in one spot: your iPod, Sony Reader, digital camera, photo printer, and other electronic devices.

Internet Explorer 8: Has a kind of "smart search" feature that remembers what you searched for, and it begins to pull results as soon as you start typing. This allows the user to narrow the scope of each search, even before hitting the search button.

Jump Lists: These are lists on your startbar with your most recently used files. Previously, you could access a few of your recent documents, but jump lists are more intuitive, allowing you to "pin" links to folders, servers, or software.

Caution: If you use Office 2007 software, you should be fine, but don't try to upgrade to Windows 7 Operating System with Office 2003 software - it's just too touchy.

Stay tuned for next week's topic:  Converting style-heavy Word 2003 documents to Word 2007
