Conquering the Chaos

Dear  ,

TopOfPageSnoopySchoolNo more swimming at the pool, now it's time to go back to school!  WHAT?  Can it be that time already?  To the dismay of many Texas children including my 13-year old son, in just a few weeks it will be that time again!

With the kids back in school, your thoughts may turn to simplifying your household.  What does "simplify" mean?  Our article in this issue helps clarify that for you.

Spotlight on...

This month's spotlight is on a home office, located in a garage.  This busy small business owner not only has the company to run, but is also one of his own busy service providers.  One challenge he faced was that his employees needed access to his office to make sales calls, as well as to obtain supplies.

Simplify Your Life

You may have noticed that many organization experts and life coaches are recommending that you "simplify" your life.  But what does "simplify" really mean?  Does it mean selling everything you own, donating the proceeds to charity, and moving to a commune?  Not at all! Simplifying is having enough without having too much--cutting back on unnecessary spending, slowing down, and focusing on your true priorities.  For your neighbor, this may mean working fewer hours to spend more time with the kids.  Your brother may make the decision to "just say NO" to the daily barrage of requests from other people.  Your best friend may choose to move closer to work or clean out the unused junk from their garage.

How can you simplify your life?
  1. Assess your Excess:  take an honest look at your life.  Do you have any free time for yourself or is your schedule too full?  Is your home or office peaceful or is it cluttered with things you don't need?  These are great areas to begin simplifying.
  2. Baby-step your Beginnings:  select one area of your life to simplify--your job, your spending, etc.  Taking on too much at once will not only overwhelm you, but it can also defeat you.  Tackle the area that bothers you the most first.  Move on to the second-largest challenge next.
  3. Envision your Decision:  for the area you selected, list those changes that you can realistically put into place immediately.  If your choice is "having too much clutter", clean out a closet.  Then, you can move on to bigger changes, like selling unneeded furniture.
  4. Reap your Rewards:  simplifying--having enough without having too much--will allow you to enjoy the peace of a balanced life, and reduce the affects of a stress-filled environment.  Enjoy!  You deserve it!
