VISIT THE HOME OF AN ENDANGERED SPECIES

Once a year, the public is invited to a nature preserve that is home to one of Central Texas' rarest creatures - the Golden-cheeked Warbler.

Located northwest of Austin, Baker Sanctuary is a 690-acre tract of virtually untouched natural habitat. The property is unique in that it remains one of the only places in the world where the Golden-cheeked Warbler nests and breeds. Only 27 counties in Texas are known to support this endangered songbird. The Golden-cheeked Warbler relies on the specific conditions found at Baker Sanctuary to survive in a world where rapid urbanization poses an increasing threat to its habitat.

Once a year, Baker Sanctuary opens to the public for guided tours. Trail walks this year will focus on Golden-cheeked Warblers, butterflies, plants, insects and the supporting habitat. Kids will take part in building nest boxes, making pine cone bird feeders, identifying birds and competing in games like a bird bean bag toss.

Admission is free! Trail snacks will be available during the walks, and a light lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. Visitors bring their own water bottles.
