All-MIAA Baseball Honors Announced

Three members of the Hope College baseball team have been named to the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) coaches' all-conference teams.

Senior Robby Poll of Grandville (Grandville HS) has been named the first team utility player while catcher Jon Ponte, a sophomore from Novi (Dearborn Divine Child HS) and sophomore shortstop Chris Mattson of Muskegon (Mona Shores HS) are second team honorees.

Poll excelled as a pitcher and the team's designated hitter. In MIAA games he posted a 5-2 record with a league-leading 55 strikeouts in 45 innings. He batted .380 against conference opponents. For the season he was 7-2 with a 3.36 earned run average, striking out 66 batters over 59 innings. He batted a team-leading .412.

Ponte ranked third in the league in RBIs (29 in 28 games) and batted .358 on the season. Mattson batted .328 overall with a team-leading 16 extra base hits.

The Flying Dutchmen, coached by Stu Fritz, finished second in the MIAA standings and posted an overall 28-12 record.

Eric Weber

NATIONAL HONORS IN MEN'S LACROSSE
Junior Attackman Eric Weber (Ann Arbor, MI/Pioneer HS) has been named to the 2010 MCLA All America First Team. Weber led all scorers in the nation with 89 goals and 38 assists. He also led the team in ground balls with 101. Weber also garnered All CCLA First Team honors as well as the Offensive Player-of-the-Year in the CCLA. "I am very proud of our team's success (12-5) this season and Eric's leadership has been outstanding. He is part of a smooth attack line, along with All CCLA teammates Allen Campbell and Dillon Fink, and our team offense seemed to gel as this year progressed. Eric increased his assist totals this year and helped to balance our attack." said Coach Mike Schanhals.

Junior Goaltender Pieter Norden has been named an MCLA Academic All America by virtue of his All CCLA status and his outstanding G.P.A. Piet captained the 2010 Hope Lacrosse Team to an overall record of 12-5. Norden recorded 197 saves on the season for a .618 save percentage. "Piet led us to a dramatic victory over #8 ranked Grove City in a complete game performance in which he had 24 saves and an 80% save rate. It was a special game and a special performance by our captain. I am very pleased by this recognition for his performance on the field and in the classroom." said Coach Mike Schanhals.
