Flying Dutchmen Gain at Nationals

Led by the sub-par shooting of senior captain Steven Strock, the Flying Dutchmen on Wednesday moved into the top ten at the NCAA Division III golf championships being played in Hershey, Pa.
Strock shot a two-under par 35-35--70 to move into a tie for second place in the individual standings. The even-par shooting of freshman teammate Charles Olson (37-35--72) allowed Hope to move into ninth place among the 37 competing teams. Hope entered Wednesday's in 18th place and needed to be in the top 23 in order to continue play on Thursday and Friday.
Methodist, N.C. leads the field after two rounds at 597 strokes. Hope is 15 strokes off the leader at 612.
The scores of other Hope golfers over the Hershey Links course were Chris Ansel 37-38--75; Nick Campbell 40-39--79, and Andy Thomson 42-40--82.
The individual leader after two rounds is Tain Lee of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Calif. at 69-69--138. Strock is tied with Mitchell Fedorka of LaVerne, Calif at 144. The ranking of other Hope golfers: 31. Chris Ansel 77-75--152, 62. Charles Olson 83-72--155, and Andy Thomson 82-82--82.
Appearing at nationals for the seventh time in school history, the team is seeking improve it highest finish of 17th place.
SOFTBALL
All-MIAA Softball Honors Announced
Three members of the Hope softball team have been presented all-conference honors by the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA). Sophomore centerfielder Stephanie Faber [pictured] of Byron Center (Grand Rapids South Christian HS) has been presented All-MIAA first team honors. Presented All-MIAA second team recognition were junior designated hitter Kori Nieuwsma of Lakeville, Minn. (Bethany Christian Academy) and junior second baseman Andrea Reinecke of Eaton Rapids (Eaton Rapids HS). The Flying Dutch, coached by Karla Wolters, tied for fourth place in the MIAA standings and posted an overall 20-18 record.
